People:me

Duration:7.30am-11.30am

Tide:high at 8.30am

Weather:mild, flat calm

Bait:mack, squid

Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers

Results:13 whiting/ 1 lsd

Report:decided to try bray harbour this morning as the weather looked good. Bait was mackerel and squid. Couldnt get any lug till after 10am and actually collected it on my way home :? Squid was from a tackle shop and in my opinion didnt compare with squid from the chinese emporium (bigger, more white flesh and easier to work with). Had the place to myself till the walkers arrived at first light. Got fishing straight away with no delays due to my new way of storing rigs ( foam tubing, thanks john 1  ). Got bites straight away and as usual was going from one rod to another .This time I didnt strike straight away and the result was plenty of whiting. I even had a double take of whiting. Lots of crabs also. At 10.10 am I had a good tug which turned out to be a doggie of over 50 cms (is this big?). I enjoyed the mornings fishing and went home happy, maybe i'll try the lug tonight (if i can stay awake, i was up early, my eyes will look like these  )

storing rigs in more detail.

Problem was that I was getting into knots everytime I took the traces out of the wallet. Friendly angler s( thanks John1 and Harry) gave me some advice. Get some foam tubing ( example: lagging for copper pipe), cut into say 6 inch pieces, then wrap the trace around it sticking hooks into the foam, unwinds effortlessly.....no more birdsnests

good man Dave.

the dog is kind of average

you can tank harry for that tip don't use it myself  i just manage to dump everything in the box and worry about it next time

it can work with the rigs you have just used.
if you put the foam in rig wallet pouches it would be too bulky.

a little tip what i do is get some telephone cable cut into 2in pieces and after you tie your new traces coil them around your hand and then wrap the wire around the trace to stop it unraveling then you can keep 2or3 traces in a single pouch hope this helps

just back from Newcastle myself plagued with pin whiting i also had dab/dog/5beard rockling/ flounder.

thanks John ,will try that. Got some tubing from work and it worked a treat. I see what you mean about bulkiness but at least I can now use all the traces I make  . Will try the telephone wire tip also  What was the weather like in Newcastle and where did you set up? I was hoping for a dab in Bray, cute little buggers :)

we go down to the right about 300 yards there is an old ruin just climb over the rocks its a bit tricky some big holes between the rocks if you go down into one it could be your last trip  i think you would be safer with company going this route

so be careful a big tide or an onshore wind could also make it unfishable here but you could just fish from the steps on to the beach on the left side of level crossing with similar results

biggest dab was 28cm.

JOHN 1 i have always used the foam tubeing, but find that it takes up a lot of room in the box. but your tip with the wire is spot on..THANKS MATE..

How far wer u casting? :)

Thu Jan 24, 2008 8:58 pm

I used 2 rods, the beachcaster for distance(only joking  , I can only cast about 70,80 yds  ), and a spinning rod which i cast about 30 ,40 yds out. The fish were mostly caught on the spinning rod, but maybe thats because i could detect the bites easier. Beachcaster is more awkward on the pier and is left on the tripod. As it got light i noticed the brown Dargle water coming out of the mouth of the harbour, maybe someone could shed light on what effect this has on the fishing :?:
