Shannon estuary Ailroe-13th January

Sun Jan 13, 2008 10:47 pm

Fished from low water 2 ish till nearly high
Sandeels and squid
13 whiting (mostly small)and 1 strap conger

After 12 months without shore casting, my already poor casting had deteriorated, and all fish caught at moderate distance
Quiet till just dark and then 1 hour of action
2 nice whiting that joined me for the trip home and dinner

Great to get out and try to work off the Christmas belly

What size were the bigger whiting Kev?

I wonder would kildysart be worth a shot for conger. I'm hanckering after big fish at this stage but would be happy just to get out

Hey Donagh

Both whiting kept were over a pound, but a lot of rattles from smaller fish and 11 pin whiting in total

Kildysart looks fantastic for conger, but on the 3 ocasions I fished there all I got was 1 huss (small)
With all the structure there, there really should be some big conger

Striclty a high or low water mark as the tidal rip here can be enormous
On my last visit here there were some serious sea trout charging fry, but refusing spinners here

Good whiting. I'd love to get some to that size. Had the same experience with kildysart but heard good things. Never go there as I'd be night fishing on my own and I'd be sh*ttin myself.

Ah dont be scared of that spot its only known as the haunted old ship yard.
I remember that place during the late 80s and early 90s it was full of some huge structures and v old buildings and salvaged ships etc It must have been a real industrious place long ago.

Thats where they are looking for planning permission for the dynamite factory so it should be fairly lively if that gets the go ahead lol

I fished it one night on my own had the head lamp on and seen eyes looking back at me off the island across the way my girlfriend had dropped me off late one evening so had to stay there till she came back at 1am lol it was a herd of goats lol.

have fished there myself a few times but never alone. You are a braver man than me Kev. Have had a few huss from there but thats all. can it produce at the right time of year. Would love to have a go on the island opposite in to the open water. Has anyone ever tried? That would be scary

Not worried about ghosts more worried I'd be over a barrel squealing like a pig

By the way Id say your better off waiting till later on in the year to fish Kildysert as there is too much fresh water in that part of the estuary for the bigger fish to feed in ant the fresh mixing with the salt would make it too cold for them...........
