Duration:About 3 hours
Tide:low water up
Weather:bitterly cold with strong SW
Bait:razor, crab
Rigs:2 hook flapper
Results:a sack load of pin whiteing and a couple of coalies
Report:Found it hard to get past the pins. Didnt get a chance on almost all casts to use the tripod. They were on the bait the instant it hit the bottom.

mite have been worth while trying to live bait one of them.
tie a one hook rig with a 4/0 and tie a small size 2 onto the shank of that with about an inch of line. bait the small hook for a whiting and hope that something takes the whiting and gets hooked on the 4/0. supposed to be deadly for bass and cod but havent tried it in a long time.
if there are that many whiting there is surely something feeding on them

I've seen this method advocated on numerous occasions but have yet to try it myself. Has anyone had any success with this?

tried free lining joey mackeral off the boat last year when we got a couple of them in the 6-7 inch bracket.
couldnt get a bite on them, and when i reeled them in 5 mins ater dropping them the fish were dead.
dunno what went wrong cos i lip hooked them with a 5/0 on a 15 foot piece of fleuro and carefully lowered it to the bottom.
3 fish died in a row, anyone know any reason why this mite have happened

Hi ya Paul.
I fished a spot last year with similar results and on a couple of occasions when returning fish to the water I watched them swim off only to be engulfed by a big bass.
I used the method above and did not get a touch on it so reverted back to tiddler fishing.
Must give it a go again...

i suppose it really is an option for a second rod or something. wouldnt want to be too reliant on it but if you got a decent fish at the end of the day it has to be worth it

Could be the temperature of your hand as Mackerel have a very thin skin.
