Report:after a very enjoyable night fishing with rodger de dodger and hush1, landing dabs, whiting, rockling, flounder and a couple of mini codling, i had some bait left over which would not last over the Christmas break, so i set off to white rock to go flounder bashing, as i arrived on the beach i was greeted with the perfect state of tide, but a lovely surf synonymous with great fishing on storm beaches around ireland strangely has never produced for me here. i set up camp in the top left hand corner a spot i have never fished before, but it was worth a try.
hell bent on getting a few flats for Christmas i started fishing in the second surf table trying to winkle out whatever i could, it was soon clear that weed and other floating debris was going to have a say in the matter, i had no choice other than to blast my baits over the shallows to deeper water.
straight away my tip rattled the tell tell sign of pin whiting, after a few seconds of brisk winding the little bugger, a counter i may add arrived in on the beach and was dropped into a bucket of seawater for recuperation, the little guy whom ive nick named pop eye due to his deformity, was soon released after i deemed him fit to pass the washing machine breakers, we'l never know how he got on.
hours passed without so much as a bite, frustration began to envelop the mind, a bad sign for any budding match angler, i began to admire the beauty of killiney bay- who am i kidding i got more p*ss*d off, then the wind died down and the surf became bearable, rigs were baited with new eagerness and went back into the tables.the fish started bitting, first flat, was a very Nordic looking flounder, if you know what i mean, grey/blue with white spots at 24cm, happy times, next cast a double, neither fish was over the 20 but i didn't really care tbh.
light was beginning fade and the image of a headlamp on the floor with a charger still stuck in it came to mind, ooops it would appear i forgot it. any who my next casts landed a few more counters , and my final cast landed a whopper of 9cm.
i wonderful way to finish the angling year, almost, on my home beach
