Decided to give rosses point one last try at low water form the rocks in to the channel.
Got there about 4ish very little flow to the water it was just getting to dusk there was something cruising about just below water and breaking the surface out in the channel but it was just to dark to make out what it think it may have been some sort of porpoise.
Set up with a squid mac and lug cocktail on the pennel and cast out
followed by one of each on the flapper sat back and waited.

As i expected started to catch crabs noticed on the flapper the squid was the last to be eaten.

at about 7 got a bite on the big bait and wound in my first codling about 4 pounds just got it to my feet in the weeds when it came off.
I was gutted it flopped around in the weed for a bit if had been wearing wellies or some thing i would have gone in after it but i was wearing trainers and it was freezing didn't fancy spending the rest of the night with wet cold feet.
carried on feeding the crabs till 9 ish then went home .
I will try rosses point again and try and get some peeler crab they have it in the tackle shop in town but its 10 euros for 4 and i am a tight Yorkshire man, the back lug cost 1 euro each which i thought was steep.

yep i lost a big pollock of dunlaoghaire pier once,went to pull it of the ledge and snap :shock: at least you got a west coast cod :shock:

You can always tell a Yorkshire man...... but you can't tell him much

yorkshire man, well; done on the cod, 4 lbs is pretty good.

FWIW, I am heading off to a mark on Monday (Christmas eve) for a few hours only - have to check the tides. It would be another hour plus from Rosses Point but it is very deep water, safe and produces ling as well as codling in the winter. Only problem is masses of coalfish on occasion.

Wind is W of S, force 4 (which means behind and helping to cast) but rain forecast from 3 pm onwards, building in intensity. Tide in around 6 pm which would be ideal. Filthy rough ground mark, you will need long rubbing leader of at least 25 kilo b/s and loads of junk leads. Loads. If anyone is interested, PM me and we'll look at arranging a meet, although there is really only enough room for around 4 to fish comfortably there.

Hard luck, but well done all the same. You have proved that there are decent coddling to be caught at that mark. My guess is that those peelers are from some far foreign shore. I have herd they work but not on there own. You will still need something for scent. The may be good at bulking a bait but I doubt if there worth it a €10 yo yos. Anyway well done.

hard luck on loosing that one - but at least you know they are there now:-))

those crab hoards can be a total pain, - if you can get large squid and use sections of it as a wrap around, over more scented bait, with a bit of elastic. it holds them off a bit longer.

Well done and hard luck Yorkshire man! Razor and Mussel if you cant get decent crab will help bulk up your baits adding scent and work well for codling in many estuaries.

Just moved away from that area last week! If only I'd known :cry:
