Report: went to a mark i haven't fished in a long time we were hoping for a codling or two but they wernt there  .
but as many of yous know you just don't know what will hit your bait next.
in my case it was a TADPOLE FISH/lesser fork beard  .
this is only the second time i have ever seen one landed.
the first was caught by my wife about 18 years ago from the east pier in Dun laoghaire' long before we had kids.she has since given up fishing  .
her fish was huge around the 38cm mark.
mine was only 27cm but i am still a very happy lad    .
we also had some shore rockling as big as 27cm not bad for this species either.
i will be back.

have come across plenty of them in rockpools/ traffic cones while gathering bait, always assumed they were some sort of rockling.
nice catch

are you sure you are looking at the right picture paul.
as the first pic is a rockling.
the one on the box it the tadpole fish  .
have been gathering bait a long time myself and have never came across one this way.
come across lots of BUTTERFISH in the pools they are quite like rockling.
here are some more pictures of tadpolefish.

nice fish john , we normally get a few from bangor pier whilst fishing for rockling ,normally on cold calm evenings .
As for finding them in rockpools etc. paul I 'd be suprised as these fellas normally hide in amongest boulders and thick kelp below the lw water mark .

prob didnt see my next post cos its only a minute before yours but it tends to be in a stream (about 12 inches deep) in some traffic cones that someone threw into the water which i have rearranged to provide shelter for fish and crab etc that i saw them. all in all i have seen about 9 or 10 but its prob the same 1 every time

you'd be amazed what you can find in cans, pipe, etc while getting bait.

Interesting stuff on Tadpole fish here. Only reason I'm resurrecting this is because I managed to pull one in on Saturday during the Munster Open Boat, about 6 inches long attached to an 8/0 C&R meathook from a pirk which had been baited with a mack fillet. Attracted quite a bit of attention on the boat as no-one had ever seen one before, skipper included. Whatever about finding them in rockpools, this fish took in 250 feet or so of water off Valencia. Weird looking little buggers, I took one pic with my phone and when vodafone decide to deliver it to my email address ( ) I'll post it up.
