East cork beach, 16-december-2007

Duration: 5pm till 9pm

Tide: Low water up. Neap

Weather: Cold SE moderate wind. 1 to 2 foot surf

Bait: razor, sand eel, squid. Very small amount of lug

Rigs: Mianly pulleys and a golds rig. 2/0 to 3/0 hooks

Results: Blank

Report: First of all thanks for the responses as everyone pointed me to the same beach. As it was mostly pms I won't name it on a public forum. I tried digging lug before hand but they were thin on the ground and it was to much work for to little reward either because I'm out of practice or the cold weather is starting to affect them.

Moved the car up a few hundred yards and walked up to the recommended spot where a good surf was showing. Kept to larger baits cast out as far as I could against the wind which wasn't to far as I'm out of practice after not fishing the last couple of weeks and not used to casting after wading and into the wind. I only tried scratching at the end as I went down here to catch codling or a painted ray.

I should of brought black wraps as a back up but maybe the fish just weren't there with the easterly winds or maybe I wasn't casting far enough. Happy to get out and try a new mark for the first time. Fishing a mark for the first time you have to be happy just to find it let alone catch a fish. Thank god for sat nav.

Most likely 'caused by the Easterely breeze (...the fish bite least). I was down there today...bitterly cold in the blusterly wind. Mind you, there was a great surf. If you had gone to the Westerly side of the bay you may have had better luck.

Perhaps thats why its called fishing and not catching . We all blank sometimes. I am no stranger to it myself but it does make it feel worthwhile when you get it right and bag up. Weeeeeeeeeeee

first of all I know what you mean about lug been scarce I dug for two hrs today for just 20 small lug and to be honest I'm not too hopeful for the fishing tomorrow night due to the east winds the beaches down here don't fish well generally with it blowing the way it is at the moment despite the fishy looking surf.
Don't feel too bad as I would be a wealthy man if I had a euro for all the blanks i've had down through the years,just think of it as a learning curve as the next trip could be the one of a lifetime at least thats what I say to myself as I'm shivering and wet,but just when you think its all over,the rod buckles and youre on a roll again,bring on the next challange and don't give up on east cork just yet!

if ya dont go ,ya never know :lol: tried 2 new marks last sat one blanked the other was alive with whiting and flounder will give the cod a try on a local beach tomorrow night they might come in if the easterly keeps up :?: one way or the other it beats whats on the telly hands down :?

There was two comps fished on the Garryvoe beaches last night.
The comp fished to the right of the stream was won with 2 fish with plenty of blanks. The comp fishedin Ballycrennane the beach about 400mts to your left was won with 5 coalfish'
I won a comp tonight on Ballycrennane with 2 coalfish. With only 2 andlers catching fish

By the looks of the weather forecasts, the fishing around east cork should pick up on thursday or friday.
The lug will be scarce in certain areas because of the high winds and the fact that its a bit colder will make them go deeper.

Thanks for the replies. its good to here anglers familiar with the area and more experienced than myself also had a tough time of it. For me it's a learning experience. I've a rough idea of what marks fish in what conditions in the Shannon Estuary though I'm still learning but cork is totally knew to me so I don't expect instant results. I saw the wind turning easterly and cold but I wanted to get down at some stage this year. The lads did point me towards youghal but I don't have peeler. I'll see if I can get down over chrismas but I'm off up the Wickla after Chrismas day so I don't know yet. It would also mean fishing high water down.
