B.A.S.S. Club x-mas comp, youghal area, 9/12/07

Mon Dec 10, 2007 2:22 am

People:9

Duration:7 hrs

Tide:rising

Weather:strong, constant wind and showers

Bait:crab

Rigs:various

Results:28 fish - 1 whiting, 2 flounder, 2 bass, 10 coalies, 13 cod

Report:Christmas comp so no master angler points.....so we increased the size of the fish - whiting 30cm, coal and pollock 33cm, cod 35cm, bass 45cm.
The wind was strong and constant across the bay with heavy weed for the first 3 hrs. The fishing really picked up when it started to get dark. The wind recently has brought the cod into the youghal area in the last couple of weeks.
The winner of the competition was Graham Burke with 7 fish - a flounder, a whiting, 2 coalies and 3 cod all over 40cm.
Clinton Rackman finished the competition with 2 fish...........1 was a cod weighing roughly 9.5lb and a bass of roughly 8lb.
I finished up with a cod and a coalie.
Drseafish has some pics to follow.

How ya Tom,

that's a fine Cod ye got, were the others in the 2-3lb range?

2lb - 4lb and they all had full bellies. I guess the bad weather is churning up the razor fish and they are coming in to feed on them.

Well if you wanted to catch 2 fish in a single session, I bet you wish it would be these. Well done Clinton Rackman.

The Bass was a 1996 year class, at nearly 12 yrs old.

Fantastic fish there weldone, I'd give my right arm for a cod that big from the shore!!! Were conditions very rough on the night? It seems the rougher the better on open beaches for Cod.

Big weather Big fish?

Someone else took this picture and asked me to put it on the site.
Its a pity the fishing has been bad the last few days, hopefully it will change by the end of the week when the wind changes direction.
