Donaghadee Peir 7/12/07

Myself and wee Bro:

4.00-9.00:

LW coming in:

Windy and cold!:

Mackeral and squid:

1 up 1 down:

Poor cod, rockling, LSD, Whiting, Coalie:

Catch and Release:: Yes

Went down to the Peir for the first time so we weren't sure when best to fish it. Decided to go when it was still bright and catch the flooding tide. Fishing was good over the flood but seemed to be picking up over HW slack, just when we had to leave! We had some lug but didn't really persevere with them. Will be back trying to get my first ever codling at some stage! Any advice on what baits and tide are best for targeting codling? :

if you realy want a cod use 4/0 hooks and peeler crab or 4 or 5 lug the bigger the bait the better no1 it keeps the smaller fish from getting hooked no2 gives a bigger scent aim to put your baits on or near rough ground as this is where the cod hang out

For the Codling in Donaghadee I like there to be a decent Blow going on, In fact the best conditions Ive fished in for them has been Full on Northerlys with a bit of east, just so the water's coming over the top of the wall at H.T. As Roger said, Codling like Big Baits with big Scents, Personal Favourite for the Codling at the Dee is a 3/0 with a Few Lug/Rag tipped with Mack. Even Small Codling have Big Mouths so don't be afraid to try big baits.

Thanks guys,
Will definitely try to get up again soon. Just getting into this shore fishing with bait! Always had a spinning rod (converted into a float rig or beach caster :) ) during the summer, mostly fishing up in Inishowen off a few special rock marks :wink: and Lenan Pier. This year has been the first where me and the wee brother have been targeting as many species as possible which meant we had to start digging bait!

Any one know if these two are different species?

The Dee pier is a good wee under estimated spot throws up a good variety of fish though not all monsters. Good catch.

You are spot on the bottom is a pouting and top a poor cod.

The bottom one looks like a pouting although its difficult to say without handling. Best way to check is by looking at the pelvic fins(just below the pectorals and sticking down at right angles in your picture), if they reach beyond the first anal fin then you have a pout, if they only reach to the vent then its a poor cod. Poor cod tend to have very light scales which get everywhere when you handle them and are also slimmer than pout. Yeah the more I look at those pics i belive you have the two species :D
