Welcome Moe...Why do you want to go fishing for herring when you are surrounded by good codling..whiting beaches down there.I've never heard of anybody targetting herring from a beach and at this time of year they move off with the mackeral.Summer is prob your best bet with a set of feathers off a pier down there but your more than likely to be plagued by macks.I've caught a few in the boat off Ireland eye during the Summer but they were very sparse around !!

Cheers for that,

I justed noticed some guys in the town selling herring that were freshly caught off the pier and thought it be great to have them biting my line!! I'm not so tuned up on the fishing as it's a new sport I took up in the last few years.

I tried fishing the beach off Wicklow opposite the murrough and only came up with crabs.. caught a few mackerals early summer but nothing from July .. didn't see any body catching them either..

Any tips or good spots???

They net herring this time of year of wicklow pier so if there in good numbers they prob can be targeted from the pier!!! set of feathers be your best bet.

These lads net the herring, unlikley that you'll catch them on a rod, but not impossible.

Better off spending your time targeting something else and buying your herring fresh from the lads on Hopkins corner . . .

Or wait til they come back in to shake out the nets . . .they make a great bait!!

That's some fish Boycie.

record herring caught on killiney beach
first i heard about it fair play.

if you caught it this time last year I'm sure you missed an entry in the 2007 ISFC yearly report.
so it should be in next years report cant wait to see it.

20 year old record of .425kg smashed by 4oz that makes your fish .453kg  in and around a pound any chance of posting a picture.

i hope it wasn't a red herring

I dont know about herring fishing in Wicklow but here in Clare we have a herring run this time of year and its by using a pike or bass spinning rod and medium fixed spool reel filled with 15 lbs line and a one oz weight attached to those smaller version of mackerel feathers or lures 3 will do you and spin them like your jigging for mackerel.

They have small mouths and are hard to hook at times.

I brought out these american clients fishing one time and they had great craic fishing for the herring.

They come in huge shoals and are gone v quickly too so its v hit and miss.

I would also like to welcome you to the site and hope you learn loads of useful information as there are great anglers here who are a mine of information they like to help as much as they can.

There are even some here who would join you for a days fishing and help you decide which bait to choose and what traces etc.

Well thats the way us in Clare operate anyway and im sure most of the nice folk here would be helpfull too.

Great bunch of lads here in this forum
