Donaghadee Pier (Drews Pier) 27-10-07

Sun Oct 28, 2007 12:56 pm

People:Me

Duration:1-6pm

Tide:High and falling

Weather:Wind wind and more wind oh and a splash of rain too

Bait:Rag and Mackeral

Rigs:sliding float and 2 hook clipped

Results:5 Wrasse (Very happy) 1 pouting, 3 whiting, 2 Pollock

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: After reading Drews reports decided to give the pier a go and see if I could have some of his sucess. I arrived to a nice empty pier (setup in Drews spot I think at the railings Sorry Drew) Float was just getting thrashed in the wind so after catching a few whiting concentrated on the big rod (Greys BZE 3-5oz) which was bought thanks to the advice and reports on this forum. Excellent will pick up on a not so windy day bites from finger sized whiting!! But still has the backbone to hawl weed in from distance.

Started Lobbing towards the far pier loaded one hook with rag and the other with mack. Straight into a whiting on the mack. Decided to see if i could get some different species so baited both with rag hoping to pick up a few wrasse. Another Lob over to the far pier and a lovely deep coloured wrasse. Same spot got me three more wrasse two of which came as a double. Bigger was around the 1lb mark. Started to get a bit quiet in that spot so I lobbed it a bit further out near the kelp beds on the far pier. The rod took a big bang thought it could be a good pollock and to a nice superise turned out to be a very deep red Pouting of just over 1/2 lb which was on steroids I reckon. Pollock fell to mack on the float when the big rod was quiet.

Drew your wee pier is good dont take crap from anyone saying otherwise!! haha

The other bonus of the day was another couple of anglers turned up and one gave me a cast of his Abu 6500 cs Multi with a was a bit nervous not to birdie it so a nice gentle cast with a 4oz got me out about 70yards I think this is deffinately on the shopping list now. I found the line level ok is there any draw backs to it?

the levelwind reduces distance and it also means you cant get a proper grip on the spool.

Eyup N.I. so she treated you alright then? Always good to know, the Wee pier is vastly underestimated by a lot of Anglers, But in honesty you'll always get a few fish off it with very little effort... Good Craic like. 8)

Gis a PM next time ur heading down mate and I'll make an effort for a session 8)

Is there no codling showing at the pier yet lads? i have to say i like fishing the pier through the winter months, don't bother with it in the summer. heard that a few flatties where showing too, good spot for a variety of species. :)

Rab,

I have only fished it twice havent had any cod or flatties so far but it is always good for a variety it seems.

hi drew, i often wondered whether fishing on down the pier a bit would account for a few flatties, don't know if you have tried this before??!

I reckon fishing the Sand on an Incoming pier just before the Moorings might give you a chance mate...
