Report: Only one fish today but a great session all the same, water was clearing up all day, should fish really well tomorrow. Hooked this chap while waist deep off the beach. He went like the clappers for the kelp beds and a right auld battle ensued, had to hold him back and could feel the rod creeking under the pressure. He then made another blistewring run across the beach at which stage I knew it was a really decent fish. Finally landed this fine specimen un-hooked, quick snaps then back to the deep blue sea to fight another day. Really satisfying to see such a wild creature returned unharmed..

Another fine example for the Model county :P

fish was about 65-70 cm long and very thick, really hard to tell but my gut said it was over the ten at the time, it surely fought like the clappers.

According to Conversion Tables on a previous post that would make the fish 8.5lbs. Teacher or JimH would give you a better idea.

I only have Jim's conversion table. That would put it around the 7lb mark. I would say it's a little more, allowing for "seasonal variation" as the economists might say. ;) That's one fish that will be very embarrassed at its next Weight Watchers meeting.

Champion fish. Reminds me of a chunker I took on king rag in Moorcombe a decade or so ago - 9.75lbs I'd say

The tables were originally built on my personal fishing over many years. I didnt weigh every fish i caught and most of the fishing was done between May and September.

When i started the guiding business it seemed like a good idea at the time when presented with bass on a daily basis for six months of the year to collate some statistics on weights and sizes. The numbers of recorded fish is considerable

some notes/comments.

The higher end of the weights are more inaccurate as i/customers havent caught that many fish greater than 10bs, and only a few 'estimated' greater than 15lbs which werent all weighed. Similarly lighter weights arent as frequently featured.

The majority if catch numbers are between 47 and 72 cms.

Methodology versus size - ie lure caught fish size or fly caught fish size are different - i'm sure frequency of bait caught fish are probably bigger but I dont have sufficient supporting data as i dont bait fish.

Within each method there are also some interesting anomalies regarding lure/fly type and size/frequency of fish caught. And the data can be extracted further reagrding time of year fly/lure colour/depth/size.....

Regarding the time of year and size of fish and biology etc im not qualified to make accurate observations - for example in a slow growing species and lets take Pats fish for example - how skinny was he in May and how much weight did he put on in 5 months - and what type of weight is this? And how does he loose this weight and hence whats the net gain per year?

There is a seasonal variation from May - October in other words catch the same fish in six different months and he weighs heavier in each month. That calculation lies in the detail of the tables i'm afraid.

But i cant be sure of this - because i'm not catching the same fish.

If you take Pats fine fish and he says its between 65 and 70 cms on a weight basis difference thats quite a lot - on the tables 6.25lbs - 7.75 lbs. Add on the seasonal inclinations and he is.......
