West Cork, Cork, Mid October

Sat Oct 20, 2007 11:07 am

People: Me, codswollop and Alan the virgin angler Murphy aka Spud.

Duration: October 14th to October 19th

Tide: High tides between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. & 8 p.m and 10 p.m. as the week went by

Weather: Wet at the start, turned out calm, dry and sunny with the occassional light breeze.

Bait: Various spinners and plugs, crab, rag, lug, squid, mackerel, razor and sandeel.

Rigs: Single hook paternosters, 2 hook flappers, conger traces and floating rigs.

Results: Spotted Ray (we think, can someone please confirm?), trigger fish, pollock up to approximately 10lb, garfish, codling, mackerel, conger eel, ballan wrasse up to approximately 4 lb, cuckoo wrasse and dogfish.

Catch and Release:: Yes - all fish were returned.

Report: A very enjoyable weeks fishing. There were two lost conger eels that felt in the region of 15lb to 30lb, it's hard to tell from a cliff. A nice bass of approximately 4lb to 5lb was lost in the surf as it broke against the beach :(

My first ever Ray, which i was delighted with. First ever Trigger too, which were great fun, and my personal best shore pollock, by a mile!!!!! Great trip!!!! West Cork is one of my favourite places in the world. John D's wrasse was the biggest caught, but we were hoping for bigger. Lost alot of teckle trying though!!! And i was very jealous of the cuckoo, which was gorgeous!!! Thanks to Lumpy for the advice before we left, and anyone else who gave advice. Thanks.
