Galway Bay SAC comp, lettergesh, 14/10/2007

Mon Oct 15, 2007 11:36 pm

People: myself, stevecrow, midget, rampent, bradan and about 15 others

Duration: 12 - 4pm

Tide:low about 3

Weather: surprisingly dry, light SE, occasional bright spell

Bait: frozen mack, fresh lug, live sandeel!

Rigs: 2,3 hook flappers for me

Results: flounder and turbot, for me others caught dogfish and ray aswell

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report: started the day with a bit of a head on me after watching ireland draw with germany over a few beers.

the forecast had promised relatively dry conditions - it rained continuously for the best part of an hour on the way to the venue, the odd downpour, down to 20 miles an hour at one stage hoping to stay on the road etc.! - i was not hopeful at all for the day

how wrong i was - a glorious afternoon looking at the wonderful scenery about us.

arrived at the venue and a crowd was already gathered at 11 sharp

had a bite to eat and started unpacking jp arrived and complained about his lug being worse for wear - but then the draw was made and was much happier down in the low draw with bradan beside him

i was pitched at 11 in the middle roughly and ready to scratch like hell

got off to a good start with a fish on first cast - turbot but not counting

then a flounder on my second - again not counting!

third cast - another fish a flounder just over 21cm i was off the mark

then it went quiet

after the initial flurry a few strolls were made and a bit of chat was had

most people had a few fish in the first hour or so and all seemed quiet up our end

then about mid way had another tap - a double - both flounder and counters low 20s

word at this stage was filtering that jp was into double figures and bradan was close by

stevecrow had his usual good start and then nothing - midget had been by to tell me about his 6 counters - so glad he wasnt in the senior comp - it was really annoying him

there was talk of a golden grey being hooked but lost

anyway kept going had another distinctive tap another turbot - this time 18cm :x very annoying

about the 3 hour mark - had another good tap and finally a counting turbot 22cm - started to gather notions of third place in my head if i could get another decent counter or a double shot

steve was over talking to me and i saw something silver at my feet - a suicidal sandeel had decided to surface - stuck him on but it got no interest

at this stage i noticed a dog coming in at the end of the beach, and about 20mins after a ray - things had died up for me and i figured that was the third place long gone

have to say i enjoyed my day and had a good buzz out of it especially listening to steve from dublin - pegged to my left - its hard to get the scobe out of some lads

as far as i can remember this is how it finished

Jp 1st place, Norbert ? 2nd place and Kevin C for seniors

1st place 12 fish, 2nd place 4 fish(4 different species), 3rd place 11 fish (just looks so funny )

juniors 1st Alex D, 2nd Danny F and 3rd Colm H.

This was the second leg the GBSAC Master Angler series.

This was also the qualifiers for the U16 and U21 Connaught teams

the others im sure will post their own thoughts

aye t'was a good day.. as for golden grey, naaa just a regular grey mullet... thats what happens when you catch a good fish on cheap beads, i know the person who caught it will set the drag the next time..

i started off good with a nice bite 1 minute into the comp.. but didnt leave it out there long enough and missed a fish(maybe 2).. bait quickly went out again and within 2 minutes i pulled out 2 nice little flounder.. little is the appropriate word.. both 19cm :? then absolutely nothing foe a few hours.. midget was pegged three pegs to my right and Fergus was to my left, fish were scarce where i was, some serious scratching methods but only managed to pull out another 2 flounder for the rest of the day, not complaining though, the 3rd flounder was 36cm (largest flounder of the day)

well done to midget for winning the junior closed.. nice pizza in Oughterard :D :D :D

Can't remember the order I got fish in, but I had 11 flatties, 2 undersize turbot and the rest flounders. Only had 4 counters :x
Hectic sport for the first hour, think I had 9 by that stage, then went quiet over low water, only got 2 more on the fill. Same every time I fish that beach, get fish on the ebb and feck all on the flood...
Good craic with JP, not too disappointed to lose to him cos he didn't have too many more fish, just got more counters
