People: me, myself and I
Duration: saturday
Tide: wet
Weather: lovely
Bait: lots
Rigs: various
Results: fish
Catch and Release:: Yes
Report:
went up to sligo for the weekend, tried out what i would consider to be some of the more likely venues for the masters in 2 weeks, as the tides were as near as i could get. actual venues wont be decided until this thurs at an EGM to discuss the competition.
tried out a wide variety of baits and rigs, various distances etc etc. had some good fishing, a few surprising catchs but no new species for the year (that narrows it down to just 30 species for you to work off   ).
valuable trip, learned quite alot, lets just hope that the fish play the game on the days that count.
ps bait tray, 7ht and new waders all worked perfectly

paul, should this not be in the competitions section - it tells anglers in the area there are fish - but not much on tactics details etc.
it does tell potential competitors that the area is fishing well for the masters - without giving away garned info by yourself - that should stand to you for the competition

Was in sligo this weekend Paul but was surfing. Would you mind sending me a PM regarding the fish you caught. I was on Strandhill and it looks a savage bass beach except that its quite northerly.
I am sure though that Bass visit it at some stage, maybe locals would know.
Would be curious to see what you caught.

one of the lads in my club is from strandhill, and the way that he talks about the place you would think that there was nothing but big bass up there, apparently he uses his boat and gets as close to shore as the conditions allow him and then drifts out and picks up a few on every drift

It wouldnt surprise me, rough ground, nerarly always a good swell and a savage tide rip. Ye just never hear much about the place but ye know when ye visit a mark and ye just get that feeling. I took one look at it yesterday and wished I had a single clipped trace and a bunch of lug..!

Strandhill is a nightmare to fish and catches of bass are exaggerated. Have fished it hard for a 4 years now and get very little but hassle and hardship there. Have had trout but never bass, there was a 10 pounder caught last year and reports of the very odd bass but most of the reports are 'pub tales' from a few locals. The rough ground to the right of 'The Cannon' looks very bassy but I've not managed to get one yet and believe me I have tried. The best time to attempt to fish here is on the ebb, on a flooding tide your gear will be at right angles to you within 5 minutes, even using a 6oz gripper. If you want to fish here give me a shout and I'll give you the spots that you'll at least pick up some flatties and trout when chasing bass becomes annoying.

What about a popper or shallow plug on a calmer day..?
Would like to give it a go on the ebb at dawn using the above.
I can imagine how hard it is to hold bottom. Walking out to get to the breakers on Saturday was a nightmare, really strong surge.

I tried it once Eoghan and to be honest I lost about 25 euros worth of plugs in a few casts, then got soaked trying to rescue one, then got the hump and went home. I did intend to try it again this summer but never got round to it, there wasn't too many calm days though. One thing that is interesting the 10 pounder that was caught last year was caught at low tide during the day and with one of those white Gulp ragworms.

Yeah thats why I figured a popper could be worth a try.
Sounds like one of those jammy 10Ib ers that pop up every now and then randomly. A guy in the right place, time etc....

seems to me that paulocallaghan passed on information in good confidence and his trust was betrayed. lesson to be learned here is to be careful who you pass information to.
just as well it was bum information.
good meeting you over the weekend on the beach paul, your actual catch results are safe with me :P :P
