Report: satrted fishing on friday got a couple of hours on a favourite mark, strated well with a bass about 6.5lb on the light gear. Then moved to another mark after bass and started to pick up fine sea trout, best fish bout 3lb. Up early the next morning with HAL off to find his first Bass on plugs. Again started with a fine trout bout 2lb, then HAL got us started with a fine Bass over the 6lb mark. While he played his first Bass I turned round to see the water boil with Bass chasing seed Mullet. Out the lure twitch and bang! nice fish on. We had another four fish each and then things went a bit quiet time for a move. Next mark wasn't fishable so back to a different spot on mark one. Had one nice fish bout 5lb sent the lure back out and wallop everthing went solid, tehn line started to peel of the reel, first he ran all my braid and got started on the backing, I couldn't believe it had to start following the fish so he wouldn't empty the reel.. 15 minutes later and the biggest bass I have seen all year rolled in front me, unbelievable fight and the fish was only five feet away from me and then snap and everthing went loose! The back trebble broke and he was away.. What a fish, not that dissapointed as he would have been returned either way but a photo would have been nce, reckon he was well over the ten! Only one more after that then home happy out.. Out this morning with Ollie and things started well with a fish on the second cast, fish sarted to come fast then to everyone, we had eight or nine all of which where returned bar one that had taken the lure down to his gills and was bleeding badly... Over all an incredible few days fishing, roll on the next big tide cause the big lad is still out there!!!

25 :shock: and i thought i did well bagging two today.

Three people over the days! its not that many but great fishing all the same! Had a ball! fished alone day one and with the lads day two and three..

where in wexford were ya fishing...??? if you would like to share if not you could pm me. if not no probs. im pro catch and release so will only take photos if possible , bass up in dublin dont seem to be as consistent as that or too any great size plus im looking to hook a sea trout for this years species. cheers :D

nice fishing there padge.....got text from ritchie just now....just a mac and one 3lb(approx) sea trout on the wedge from our usual spot....i reckon this coming 2-3 days gonna be good.

Great few sessions there Padge, nice one. I got me first seatrout today, 3lb..good scrappers alright, thought it was a Bass until I seen a silver bar jumping out the water. Also got some nice jumbo Mackerel, good to see these big ones are still about, they certainly give a good account of themselves on light gear. No Bass today though, just the one last Friday, as Joe says next 2/3 days look good with the tides so we'll see.

Yeah hope it fishes well for ye! I won't get out got to work! Well a man got to make a living.. Fishing has been great lately. Really enjoyed our day on your mark it was a cracking outing!

Thats an Okuma VS on the berkley isit???IMHO its one of the best from okuma.What braid did you load it with...from the color look like FINS PRT or PP??Whats the lure of the day if u dont mind sharing...

Have two spools one with verivas 15, lovely and light and have power pro 20 on the other.. Rather the verivas to be honest. It's a lovely little reel I couldn't fault it handels fish really well and like the drag system, also performs well with the braid has great line lay. Like the ssg but think it might be time for a change to be honest!

The chap on this link - never FISHED before and landed a 10.5 pounder on saturday afternoon last whilst in the middle of a bass fishing course!

How many times have we seen it before though. I saw something similar before years ago but the Bass was approx 8Ib and the little lad was about 10 years old. He was casting about 5 feet out max into white water and became "Snagged"..... Git...! :-)

yeah great fishing Jim, begginers luck is right. I lost a cracking fish myself, Rusty Hooks, then dropped the lure on another mark, but thats fishing! Was more upset about the lure than the fish. Conditions have just been perfect. Hope to get out around Waterford later in the week, bit of a change of scenery and plenty of big bass! Like you say eoghan great to see being put back in one piece to fight the good fight again!!!

Dont wish to hijack your post again P - as you can see from his expression he had a really positive experience. He said to me as he held the fish back in the water

'...that it felt like he had caught a big wild animal and that he was holding for a short while a big wild animal - something like a rare tiger that could do him no harm....' then the fish swam off.

Jim not a bother anything that promotes catch and release is to me a bonus.. The more I fish the more passionate I become about minimising the harm caused to the fish. They are wild spirited cretures that we should respect. I have just looked at a new post with bass as old as myself kept for the sake of a badge from the specimen board it saddens me.. But feel that to post would only really inflame another argument.

just in relation to taking of fish here are some notes from the world leaders on the subject


The percentage of anglers who felt that a small fish should be allowed for food was 73%, roughly comparable to 2005. When put together with our question on slot limits it is clear that many of our members understand that the brunt of the harvest on long-lived stripers should not be born by older, breeding-age fish. While we do not have an exact calculation, we know that many of the 27% who opposed the taking of a small bass are so concerned about the deterioration of the striped bass resource that they want to sharply curtail the harvest of stripers of all sizes until the numbers recover.

Support for a slot limit to take the pressure off large breeders was at 74%, in line with last year’s 75%. Votes were quite evenly split, though, on what the slot should be, with 20-26 being the most popular at 123 votes, though the two other slots each received 99. A slot limit to take the pressure off large breeders was supported by 76 to 31 in MA , 71 to 16 in NJ, and was favored in every state in our survey.

Survey after survey from anglers and guides cried out to remove the pressure from large stripers.

Cheers Jim! I have to say i am impressed to see that a number of members have voiced their opinions around the issue! It seems only logical to take the presure off these fish. There is an incredible stamp of fish in at the moment, have noticed a merked increase in the average size of the Bass we are catching, it makes sense to do your best to protect these fish as with out them I may take up GOLF! By the way it will be a cold day in hell before golf lives up to light tackle Bass fishing!
