Report: Down in Kerry for the weekend doing a spot of work for Tim, so took family down as well for weekend. Had planned a bit more fishing, but computers being what they are and with family responsibilities didn't get out as much as I liked :( ....
Was hoping to break my Kerry jinx - never got a bass down there for some reason....
Anyway, tried one spot on the south side of the peninsula after a tip from petekd (thankyou), but didn't seemt to be much happening there (looks like it could be good though), although Tim managed a large spider crab to a sandeel. So we decided to head back over to the familiar Brandon beaches and try our luck on one of them. Fermoyle had jetskis and windsurfers so we moved on to another spot Tim knows.
Couple of guys fishing there already had a few bass, flounder and dogs to sandeel - saw them landing a bass just after we arrived. Had great expectations at that point :) . It was a sandy shelving beach, with big rollers coming in, breaking close to the beach - looked good for fishing and good for the kids (if you can keep them back from the waves).
I had one rod long, one close in, but soon moved them both close.First couple of casts the bait was being stripped, but then my old rod went a bit mental and the line started screaming out. I struck into what felt like a big fish and started playing it into the beach. Got it close in and thought I'd get a wave to help it the last bit. Unfortunately I got a big wave - bad move. Saw the fish at the top of the wave swim/fall? down to the bottom (never seen that before so that was at least a positive of the experience) and it was a good size (at least 6lbs given the length of it) and I think a bass. The fished reached the bottom, the wave crashed over it and the line went slack. Fish gone. Only yards away from me. I was gutted.
A few shouts later (with only mild swearing as the kids were present) I cast back out and managed a flounder to the razor.
Tim had a couple of knocks, but no fish. As the tide turned and started dropping the fishing went off and the last hour was spent fruitlessly standing in the rain and what was worse I'd come down with no jacket and the family were back at the house having tea.
Anyway, am going to down again a couple of weeks sans family and work for a full weekend of fishing :D - anyone got a good line to break it to the wife?. Looks good for the comps down there anyway for the guys heading down, very sorry I am going to miss them....
