SOMETHING OUT OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

Fished greystones this evening and have never witnessed the sight of mackeral hording sprats to the surface in about 2ft of water.they were causing what could only be described as a washing machine effect with maks flying out of the water every which way with the odd sea trout leaping amongst them.pure class sight to see lads and great fishing aswell with decent flounder,coalies,lsd's and any amount of maks some of which were easily 2lb the biggest i,ve had this year. 8)

was out on my kayak a few weeks back, and saw mackerel leaping out of the water, thought they might be feeding on sprats, but soon afterwards a pod of porpoises surfaced and began to start a feeding frenzy where a couple of cormorants and gulls joined in, i was petrified and amazed at the same time. a porpoise 5 meters from the yak at about a mile out is scary at least they were not inquisitive of me.

Sounds like a sight to behold alright! 8)

I'm going down there after work at 17:30. Hopefully they're still there. Have been trying to get Macks in Greystones all summer and gave up about 2 weeks ago! I'll report later....

OK - got down to the rocks behind the pier at 18:00. Caught 2 macks but had to leave early cause of the match.

Decided to try again early this morning on the high tide. Arrived at the rocks at 06:15. Had six macks by 07:00 and then nothing until I left at 08:00. Even landed two at once. You know the way it is with Mackeral - you seem to get them on nearly every cast and then they disappear for a while.

Anyway, was heading home and decided to take a quick look at the beach. Saw some gulls causing a commotion so went down to the shore with my rod. There were sprats jumping out of the water onto the beach. Second cast and I caught a sandeel on the feathers. Third cast and my line snagged under my reel. I had to leave as only a scewdriver would fix this. Annoyed to say the least!!

no probs mike glad to here their still there,i always find south beach the most productive especially at dusk you never know what will be caught...

down in brittas bay the summer before last and the mack had chased sprat up on the beach , they where an inch deep by 3 foot wide in a line along the high water mark the full length of the bay ,thats one big shoal of sprat and one megga shoal of mack :shock: someone asked me was it a fish kill ie, pollution and when i told them what caused the sprat to beach themselves they thought i was takin the piss :lol:
