DUBLIN BASS MARK-9/9

People:Me and Ritchie

Duration:0730 hrs-1630 hrs

Tide:In and Out

Weather:Overcast/Sunny

Bait:Mac, rag, squid, peeler and lure.

Rigs: Paternoster and running peternoster.

Results:1 bass,2 mac,1 rockling,a few pollack and doggie.

Catch and Release:: All CNR accept mackerel.



Report:When down again to the same marks that we fish a few days ago....this time around with bait.Both of us have 2 rods each.Had a few doggies on the bait and a rockling.
As the tide start to reach it peak....we started spinning with plugs and softies.....had a nice bass(22.5 Inch) with Lunker City Slug-Go softies ....after a few photo....the fat bass released unharm.....the fish look very healthy tho....a few minutes after that....Ritchie got a hit on Maria/Yamaria Chase.....but the fish manage to get away in the middle of the fight....look like a nice size judging from the fight....keep on making a few long blistering run after an attempt to bring it closer....After that everything start to go quiet again.
Over all its a nice session with few bass for fun.

that is a really nice rod you are using. what is it? and is that a abu revo? if it is, how do you find the drag?

The rods that i am using is a Temple Fork Outfitter TiCr2, 7' 3 pcs....the original handle is a cork handle....i customize the handle including the reel seat just for the split grip.

The reel is daiwa 153 HSTA....the drag was fine....sufficient enuff for the sea bass....but i would say that revo drag is more superior and will be more than enuff for lunker bass,pollack and pike.

I dont think its hard to catch them....the only hard things bout them is to be at the place at the right time.I think theres still lots of them here in dublin....but most people had a problem to be on the marks at the right time when the bass is there.Took us quite a few outings to read their behavior,when they will come patrolling the cove on what tide in specific place....when they re there i am sure they will take the offering...most of the time...the lure or the bait....after some times...they will gone....if u get lucky sometimes there will another pack or another individual lunker come in patrolling and found ur offering to them....

getting the right time and right place here is nearly impossible. i know it has only been done twice in the 6 years i have been in galway. both to the same lucky git :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

Congratulations to you both - im glad that you've quickly identified one of anglings biggest myths - 'bass are hard to catch'. I often wondered was this an urban legend that grew as a form of protectionism for the species. You have done the hard work in determining the patterns/behaviours etc and finding the fishing - the real skill in my opinion comes next. Once you have found them you need to protect them from many things, there is almost a certain sense of responsibility towards a finely balanced species.

Maybe these fish have been swimming under the noses of countless dubliners unfished for many years, or maybe some anglers already know the places and times even the methods you fish and enjoy this fishing themselves and stay quiet- but what i do know - living close to a vast population center like Dublin you need to be very careful with information in all of its forms.

Abus is one of the most versatile baitcaster/multi ever made.Theres a lots of upgrades can be done.Theres a few company that specialist in making an after market parts and upgrades kit so u can tweak ur own abus....as for drag...ive heard many ppl upgrades them by using [url]http://smoothdrag.com/[/url] carbontex washer.

Thanks for the comment Jim....I believed that most of this 'legend' created just to protect the marks.What i experienced to get myself a bass is...theres still a lots of study to do even if u know the bass mark location, unless u get lucky and be at the marks when the fish there which will make it quite easy to predict their pattern and routine which still can change with regard of other variable....and still took times to observe.
I even came across a few angler spinning on the the marks that been said as a bass marks....and still the angler ask me what u fishin for as he saw me using plug.When i told him that i am fishin for bass...their face change immediately and keep on asking who told me that i can get bass here.Same if i ask for any angler that i've met on the marks....."is it possible to get bass here??" most of the time the answer will be "no.u cant get bass here....u go to wexford or waterford to get them bass" I dont blame them....as from what i observe most of them are sport angler and what they do just trying to protect the fish and area from poachers.Some marks that i observe is quite near to the population but i dont see much angler visit them....maybe because of the quite a long walk u have to do before getting there....but thats fishing....the harder to get to the marks....the harder u fish...the snaggy the marks....the more u get from it....

midget there are plenty more bass being caught than you think round galway - and not just at the one location of one bloke you know!!!!

its like rappalajoe said they are there and people dont know it or if they do they dont want to say...

now if i had the wealth of experience that jimH has im sure they would be easier to catch for me - i still have to put in a lot more time to learn their movements - but like anything you only get back what you put in

Well done joe, sounded like a great wee session there. thats a whopper bass. alot of what u guys say is right on the money and made some good reading.I think the key is persistance.

There is no doubt about it FM - if its possible to invest your time you will get the results. A lot has been written about bass fishing - lots of it true and lots of it 'not so accurate'. Try and set out with the frame of mind that at least you know the fish are there - and its up to me to catch them, bit silly i know.

The bass angling challenge comes from many aspects, tides, clouds, moon, windforce, temp, wind direction, sun on and on and as RJ says thats where much of the interest lies, and it does, there are so many influences. You invest in an early morning, you travel to a place, you get ready, you fish hard for three hours, you dont catch anything, you feel tired all day, But you learned something!
Maybe not a lot but, a small piece of the jigsaw. You saw the sunrise, no traffic, a fox in a field just below a low fog. And its the same everytime you go.

Once you break that 'code' and i hate that word in fishing, it does become easier.

You can then set personal targets like -

Are there more places where i can find them
Can i get a fish when or where i would least expect to
Can i learn to catch one on the fly
Even though all my indicators say probably not - is it still possible to catch a fish?
Do i actually need any 'indicators' at all?


on and on and on forever and ever.....

The fish above was put in a small pool to recuperate before it was released but the most amazing thing was that it found a route out as if it knew the place to go and even manoeuvred itself on its side between two rocks, to see such a large fish doing that is something I will never forget.

well i suppose i should put in the time but me being at school and having loads of homework each night just leaves weekends.....i just wish i hade more time... :cry:

oh yeah, i worded that wrongly corby. i should have said i know of only 2 bass caught in galway in my time here.
