Report:
Made my way down to the burren pier last Saturday morning stopping off at Sandycove to dig a few lug. Hard work getting lug from this spot these days but I eventually scraped enough together. Hit the pier at low water, there was five other anglers fishing already so I thought I was a bit late although both anglers I spoke to hadn't caught anything. Set-up and had a g.h.b on first cast :D of about 2.5lbs followed by 2 bass both about 2lbs. After that it went quiet except for 1 good good bite on the clam bait which I missed. Headed off to chat with another angler for 15mins and decided to have one more cast, got a bite which nearly pulled the rod rest over and struck into another g.h.b of over 3.5lbs...kept this one as it was deep hooked.
Was going to try further down the estuary but I could feel the sunburn coming on already so headed off home happy out.
Everything I've heard about these fish is true...great fighters and great eating to. Thanks to the other members of this site (shambobala, sonaghan and blaker) for passing on the info. on another thread.

well done Rory, glad to see the info paid off for someone on here!
don't know how you managed with 6 people fishing on burren pier that must have been pretty cramped.
is the weed still a major nuisance there?

Thanks lads...Cortaz, I didn't know there was an irish record. Found out that a specimen is just over 3lbs from this site
http://www.irish-trophy-fish.com/trophies/marine.htm is this correct?
shambobala..only one fishing the pier, most of the rest fishing the channel on the left and yes weed is still a nightmare!!!

The Gilthead bream record was broken on saturday in Cork harbour by an english angler practising for the small boats festival, around 5lbs I believe...

Great to hear they're in the harbour Dave...I assume it was caught from a boat. I wonder if they are in the harbour all year round if any have been caught from the shore :?: :?: :?:
