Report:Headed over to Ards direction in seach of mullet and quickly found a very big shoal feeding in shallow water.I threw out several handfuls of mashed bread and within minutes there was loads of small mullet feeding on it so i cast out my float. No time had passed before i got the first bite but it was a tiny mullet and i missed it.During the next hour i missed about 10 more fish, all were small(8oz) and were pecking at the bait making it hard to get a hook in them.
I changed over to the fly rod hoping for my first mullet on the fly.I started with a couple of different small white flies but there was no interest so i changed to artificial bread and had a missed bite first cast, again from a small fish. The next hour had more missed bites and the tide had started to drop so i was slowly following them out from the shore.I could see alot of very big fish moving about 300 yards from the shore so i waded out to get behind them and threw out a few mashed up slices of bread. There were big fish on it in an instant. After a few more fish nosed the fake bread i threw in more mashed up slices and waited for the fish to feed on them.As soon as the first fish was feeding i cast to land the bread fly just beside the free offerings. All of a sudden one of the feeding fish turned and took it and when it felt the hook it jumped clean out of the water.I spent the next 20 mins trying to get the fish 300 yards to the shore so i could get my net. After almost 20 mins it was in the net and ready to get its photo taken. It weighed in at exactly 4lb.What a fight on a 6 weight fly rod.I`ll be out with the fly rod again very soon :D

I have to say it was great fun standing waist deep in water playing a nice mullet 300 yards from the shore but next time i`ll bring my net out with me so i dont have to walk back and get it

Hi Davy,
Ive been trying for mullet on the fly for about 3 months in Strangford and still no hook ups and its starting to really get to me, so ive been fishing for pollock, coalfish and macks. There less than 20 feet from the shore and are averaging 1 1/2lb and go right upto 4lb. I had a 4lb pollock on a home made fly 2 weeks ago, very good fight, my personal best on the fly rod. This spot is still fishing but dont know how long it will last........

Stevie have you been trying much on your own doorstep?i`ve had loads of interest in the fake bread during the few sessions when i`ve tried it,athough mostly from very small fish.We were down there at low tide a week ago and saw more mullet than i could begin to count. And they all seem more than happy to eat the real bread.
