Report: on night shifts this week and tonight was my night off, so to stay in the sleep pattern i went fishing, the f.p.o agrreed that it was a good idea , any way had some frozen mack and sandeel , so packed the gear into the car,put the wee lass to bed made the wife a cuppa and waited until 11pm. Once the clock hit 11pm i was off to fahan marina to try for rays, once there i parked the car got my gear and headed to the beach below the marina. In the way down i turned over some weed and collected a few crab.
started off with crab on one rod and sandeel on the other, 5 minutes later the sandeel had been taken and a bite was missed, rebaited and casted out, checked the crab bait, it came back untouched, before i could rebait the other rod bent over, so i grabbed it and set the hook, the fish gave a good fight before it was beached, a LSD of 59 cm

great start, but it went down hill, well the fish or dogs keep biting, but refused to hook up, the crabs where active and stripped all baits in minutes, but surprising the crab baits got no bites, you think an area full of crabs it would make a good bait.
as the rain got heavier and the wind picked up, it got harder to see the bites and once the tide started to run the weed become a problem, i cut down to one rod at this time because my line had caught in the tip light holder and almost broke my rod, i had check and it was clear (NB reflectivr tape from now on) so with one reel out of action due to frayed line and a wee birdie, sorry back on topic the weed. It became a problem as it caught on the line and with the wind and tidal flow it pulled the grips out, otherwise 4oz held bottom.
was getting low on bait, because of active crabs and no sign of my intended species, thronbacks, so on went a pennel rig with the last fillet of mackeral, tied on the last two sandeels and cast as far as i could, as i waited i started to pack up, soon all that was left was th rod, tripod and my last hope of a ray, just as i was about to give up the tip sprung back, so quick as a flash i struck, and yes it felt like weed. Once the shock leader hit the rod tip it became jammed with weed, so i cleared it and lifted the rod and wound in and seen more weed on the hook, at this point the weed began to fight back, once beach i saw another doggie

I always find at Fahan that if the crabs are out, then the raysaren't about.
Any time the rays are feeding, your baits never seem to get touched by the crabs...
Seems to be a case of "wen the cat's away, the mice will play"
