Donegal Bay rock mark - august 7th

Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:36 am

People:Myself

Duration:2 hrs

Tide:Starting to fill

Weather:Sunny with brisk north westerly

Bait:Ragworm

Rigs:Float rig

Results:14 ballan 1 corkwing

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:The rag from the weekend was starting to stink out the flat so it had to be used so it was of to the rocks for a bit of wrasse fishing. The swell too had died away so I was fit to get out to one of the preferred wrasse marks.

After a few missed bites and getting stuck in the kelp a couple of times i got the float set at the correct depth and from then on it was a take a cast. The average was nearly 2lb which was quite small for the mark but then again I was using rag so wasnt expecting the bigger fish. Well i wasn't expecting one but at one point the float vanished and after a short but hectic tussle I was chuffed to land a 4lb fish, thought for a minute he was heavier but the scales showed him bang on 4lb. Also picked up a little corkwing but alas no sign of any rock cooks or goldsinny.

Short session but plenty of action so happy enough.

Pete, that's an excellent return from 2 hours fishing, if only all sessions were like that!

Well done, James.

Aye your right Roundourway, he had me running across the rocks with the drag slipping as I went. Any amount of wrasse on that mark or indeed any of the rocky areas of Donegal or Mayo. One of our few remaining stocks that has yet to be subject to commercial activity, long may it continue.
