Killiney, Sorento terrace and white rock. SWFF

Wed Jul 18, 2007 5:35 pm

People: Myself

Duration:1-3

Tide: Started when tide was half full and on the flood

Weather: Small swell with very clear water with the odd rain shower. Very sunny between showers.

Bait: blue and white deceiver with a small amount of tubex for the body (see picture below)

Rigs: Ultra fast sinking braded shooting tip

Results: Pollack, Pollack everywere but not a bass in sight!

Catch and Release: Yes

Report: After reading the results by Gazo and bovenip I thought I would pay a quick visit to the two swimming platforms closest to Sorento terrace. I fished the area closest to the terrace first and then white rock when the tide was nearly full. As Gazo reported the Pollack fishing was excellent, I literally caught a fish every cast for the first six or seven casts (no idea if the actual number). It then slowed but was constant until I moved to white rock diving platform to try for bass. The pollack were nothing spectacular in terms of size but they put up a good fight on the fly rod. As previously mentioned the pollack were throwing themselves out of the water. I have never seen Pollack breeching out of the water because they were hitting the fly so hard. Excellent sport! I.ve only started SWFF and this provided excellent experience in terms of being able to see the fish rising to the fly and knowing when to strike. The first mark is also quite tricky to cast at because of the cliffs directly behind. White rock did not produce any fish, nor did I see any. However I think that the tides might have been too high.

well down with the fly, that mark is teaming with resident baby pollock. hard luck with the bass, but you where at the wrong spot. over that platform lies sand, sand and more sand. the only time you get fish there is after a gale. if you move just 300yd south you would have been fishing over flooded rock pools where the bass feed. everyone seems to be fishing killiney on the fly now, i met a man yesterday who does it and met a man last week who got a sea trout on the fly, maybe i shoul take my fly rod out :D youl get the bass next time mate!

Sounds a lot of fun! I'm going to give it a try tomorrow morning, unless someone advices otherwise: low tide at around 9.15, high tide 4pm. Would this be a problem? Anyone up for a spinning session??

It is great fun. If you are going to try fly fishing for pollack I would go when the tide is half in and on the flood. Also, don't be too concerned with trying to get maximum distance with the fly as the fish are literally under your feet. If you are going to the first mark, don't go all the way down to the swimming area but about 20 of the path steps before the white swimming shed hope over the railings and make your way down to a fairly flat area of rock. There is a big drop off below this area and all the pollack seem to be hugging the wall or are slightly out from it. Have fun and be careful of the swimmers! They are mostly naked!

Thanks for the tip. I will give it ago when the tides are right and I have some more free time. Did the other man say that he had caught the sea trout at this mark that you mentioned!

Nice fishing Denis. Went down there this evening to try some SWFF didnt get anything lots of weed. Might go down tomorrow some time might see you there inigo. Is fishing better towards where the nudist beach is?

The nudist area is where I was catching the pollack. If you don't mind catching a climps of an old naked man once in a while you should be ok. In fact you go around the corner from the swimming area closer to sorento terrace so you you will avoid mental scaring for the most part.

On the map the dots as as follows

Blue dot = Nudist swimming area
White dot = Access/path to the swimming area
Yellow dot = Mark where I was catching the pollack
Red dot = White rock

I'll be there at around 11, jack. I'd like to try for pollack first (at the yellow dot). Hope to see you there.
