Report: The weekend started at 5.30am Friday with me on the beach at Islandhill, Comber digging lug worm. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to catch low water in Belfast Lough for rag and my usual dealer was on holiday. Didn't mind though, it was a lovely morning with not a sinner around.
As a footnote- this spot on the Enler River, where it enters Strangford Lough, was alive with what I can only assume were mullet. There were some big fish judging by the splashes however, make any attempt to get close and they were away like a rocket. Could be worth a shout for any mullet anglers out there. :)
Mid morning, hooked up the caravan and headed for Benone. Intention was to fish Benone Beach on Friday evening but the weather turned really nasty so I had to give it a miss. Saturday was a better day but due to the crowded beach at Benone I ended up at Downhill.
Started with a three hook flapper and aimed for the third breaker - you know how it is  There was a nice wee surf running and I soon detected bites but on the retrieve there wasn't much weight but then I noticed two crabs having a good chew on the lug and mack. I had another few casts which ended the same way before I decided to change tack. I reverted to the bass rod and went light with a two ounce weight and three hook pat which I delicately cast into the flat table of water between the breakers. Again it wasn't long before bites started to register and on the light gear I thought that it had to be something a bit more substantial - sure enough caught the first flounder. Nothing spectacular, came in under 8" but I was glad of the interest and was enjoying this type of fishing. Caught two more before the FPO arrived back to collect me.
ps Spoke to another guy who set up just after 6pm and he told me he had caught a bass on the Thursday evening approx 2.5lb.......so they are around.
