N.Clare and S.Clare

Did a spot of Wrasse fishing from the rocks using Rag and had a ball landed my first Cuckoo. I was using a little rod that casts 1/2 oz and pulled up (after several minutes) a dayglo orange whopper weighed on a neighbours scales at 6lbs 2oz (as usual I had no camera and he went back unrecorded) I knew this was a specimen but when I was talking to someone in a tackle shop he said that was the Irish record ....ffs I was bulling (I said I must have got it wrong it was plob only 5lbs) I was glad to see when I checked the record was over 7....talk about throwing away a winning ticket.

Also picked up Mackerel Dab Plaice Huss and Dogggie.

Went to a south clare pier and took my 7 yo gave him the small spinning rod with tiny size 12 sabaki to jig from the end of the pier. In No time he had a brace of herring (the barstward I never caught one of them  ) so after a while with nothing biting and Aidan bored I took up the little rod and had a blast.....loads of little herring the biggest being the size of your hand pollock, and a couple of coalies of about 1lb.

I also caught 2 fish that I cant identify they were the length of your hand and Bream shaped (upright flat fish type) with a rounded front, the closest likeness is the gilthead.... I missed taking a shot as for the first my little fellah was off with the camera and the second fell back as I was unhooking him....Any ideas?

Thanks for trying but no the gilthead looks the closest from the angle in the species guide but as it is not in profile I dont know. In the CFB sportfish pdf guide the Ray's Bream looks a good fit but still cant be sure. I am only a few of seasons at this but I didn't think half way up an estury by a pier wall was a Bream location.

For anyone in the area though, when the tide and current collided there was a sheltered area at the end of the peir with less turbulence and slower current and when the water flow was at it's crazyest ploping feathers into the relative calmness accounted for the bigger fish ( just under a lb) Just a theory.

My post was a bit misleading....the big orange lad was a ballan, the cuckoo was under a lb.....chuffed with both though.

On mature reflection the herring were most likely Sand Smelt.
