What part of the pier did you fish from?

As usual , any wrasse will hit hard and try to go into the rock or kelp when hooked. It striped a line from my reel a few times....the only things that i wish for each time out fishing....i fish all parts of east pier facing to the sea. Got the wrasse on the most far end of the pier near the wall.

Hey Joe, I think I saw you yesterday. Did you end up with a black bag full of fish and headed towards the area of the kiosk in the afternoon? I "fished" the area by the weather station with 2/3 friends but didn't get one mack... One of my friends caught a small and a tiny pollock on the feathers (both released!). I went to the end of the pier but there were too many people and didn't fancy getting close or cause any trouble with those already there. Perhaps you could give me a few tips and show me how to fish if you head out there again....

Hi Inigo,
Thats not me....is the guys with the black bag is chinese??If he is....thats maybe Alex ,yeah we fish together with a few lads that works in Rorys of temple bar....i dont fancy to catch a lots of mac, but its no doubt a large mac will give an angler a good fun fight on the light set up...i also dont catch them a lot sometimes....i think its just the matter of luck. From what i know the mac move in group, they are pelagic which will be more attracted to shining and fast moving lure(eratic movement).Alex and one other local guys tend to catch more mac. From my observation, the way they retrieve their lure is fast with a hard and fast jerk in between. We dont use feathers and from my observation the spinner guys tend to catch more mac than the feathers guys on that side of pier.Other than that, the fish shoal tend to move a lot....after sometimes of catching after each cast, the action stop and after sometimes they re back.Try using a low diameter mono or braid(10,8 or 6 lb braid) will increase ur ability to cast far....with a lots of ppl around its the matter of luck on where ur sitting, the current flow that will effect the route of your lure and where the shoal are holding, thats why sometimes u can see the guys next to you catching fish every cast and u re blank, the position where he is standing, the distance of his cast and the current that drifting his lure to the fish shoal are the factor.Btw...are you a few guys that passing us(near the wall that going to sea)when one of us get a pollack on the spinner??

Never tried the east pier. I always follow everyone else to the end of the west pier. Does be crazy with all the feathers flying everywhere!
Can mackerel be caught anywhere along the east pier or do you have to go to the end.

Hi scamper,
Yeah, the mac can be caught anywhere a long the east pier. From my observation, the shoal tend to be moving a long the pier, sometimes the action is at the end, sometimes in the middle.Theres always a chance of getting a mac there.Just keep on moving and changing place.I think the place is a bit safer compare to the end of west pier. They re pack on the weekend, but theres still a place to fish in between the angler compare to the end of west pier where everybody tend to be focusing on one spot.

Anywhere but where we were standing apparently! Thanks for the tips Joe. Yeah, many people there on Sunday... I didn't see anyone but my friend get a pollack though. I knew about the macks moving in shoals, that's why I kept trying. I guess I was just unlucky. I only used a single feather for a while myself, most of the times it was the german sprat, dexter wedge/blade, mack spinner, and a bigger silver Kilty lure. I think I was casting a decent distance, more or less like my friends with their bigger beach rods and heavy weights, particularly with the 1.5oz wedge, which I lost in the kelp. We didn't move but a few yards left and right. That was probably one of the mistakes we made. So better luck next time I guess. I'm thinking of getting some of those plastic lures you posted on another report and give them a try. I won't give up so easily!!

For the spinner, just go for the cheap one as u have a high possibility of losing lure over there. If you have time or arrive there in low water tide, take a walk a long the drop off by the water edge,u will found a lots of lost spinner that snag to the rock and kelp. Most of them just snag at the edge of the drop off.

Thanks for that Joe. I'll try the east pier next time. Spend more time dodging leads on the west pier! :x Greystones is good for the mackerel at the moment though.
