Report:
Seeing as bass weren't available, I thought I'd try and catch my first gilthead. This was my second shot as I'd tried this area earlier in the month and blanked. Things didn't get off to a good start when I called into my usual bait supplier to pick up some crab only to be told that they hadn't arrived. So the fallback plan was employed, which involved digging lug when I got there. Fortunately there was plenty and had 50 or so in no time. I also managed to get talking to a local guy who gave me a tip on a good mark (thanks Brian). I got myself setup just before the flood and within 15 minutes had my first bite. At first I thought it was a schoolie bass as the take was similar, but very quickly I realised I was into a completely different kind of fish as a great scrap ensued before it broke the surface and I confirmed it really was a gilthead (think 2lb mackerel and you get the idea). The fish weighed in at 2lb 1oz and as it was my first I decided to hold on to him. Approximately 20 minutes later I had another bite. This time it was a bass of about 2.5lb which was released. I think this will likely be the one and only time I was disappointed to see a bass! After that things got quite and weed started to become a problem so I packed up and headed for home. This experience seems consistent with what I've heard about giltheads moving through in shoals during the flood. So its a case of being in the right place at the right time to ambush them.
