Thanks! I was using the 'Angling' section of boards.ie for the last while but there are very few posters there. Looks like I've found a site with a lot more activity! Newtown beach is just south of Ballygarret in Wexford. First time I'd fished it and went with a local who seems to know it well. For the 3 hours, I'd say about half the casts resulted in some sort of catch - very good return.
I'm an occasional fisher, about 3 or 4 times a year in the sea and also do some fly fishing in the rivers.
BTW - I know very little about regulations. We kept the bass and the other half cooked it up for dinner next day. Everything else was put back. Damn - have I broken some rule here....?? What are the regs around sea bass?

That's a nice fish for daylight on that beach.
No, you were fishing on the 8th May so you're in the clear :D. The regulations are that you can keep up to 2 bass in any 24 hour period, any bass you keep must be over 40cm from nose to tip of tail and you can't fish for bass from 15th May to 15th June.
If you do catch a bass during the closed season, just handle it carefully and return it to the sea as quickly as possible to give it the best chance of survival. The intention with the closed season is to improve the chances of bass spawning successfully. Our bass stocks are low, which is why there is a ban on fishing for them commercially or selling them.

he,s pulling your leg 40 cm is the legal size for bass personally i only keep em if they are 70 or bigger

never measured it - looks over 40cm - does it??

a tip for u is to put two peices of tape on your rod or rod rest 40cm apart that way u will be 100% if its a keeper and in the unlikley event of someone stopping u to measure it u will be legal once u only have two that is :!: i recon 80% of casual anglers would think i was messing if i informed them of the law on bass. when in any tackle shops i dont notice any big signs informing anglers of the law is it any wonder they dont know
