Eyeries and environs on the Beara peninsula, 5th - 12th May.

People:Me and the girlfriend.
Duration: 5 days fishing in all. Daytime only.
Weather:Middlen to fair.
Bait:Peeler, King rag, mackerel, frozen lug, frozen squid, frozen sandeel.
Rigs:Pulleys and then what's apparently called the "Greystones" rig long rig body and short snood to hold the bait above a kelp bed. Flattened leads.
Results:7 Wrasse (largest 2 lb 6oz), 2 conger, 1 Rockling, 2 huss.
Catch and Release:: Yes/No
Report:Had a great week down in John Angles fishing cottage near Castletownbere, unfortunately the weather was not good enough to get out on the boat while we were staying there.
Had some great fun learning how to rock fish, normally I do clean ground.
It makes a change to catch some nice fish during the day, in Dublin area I tend to have to do an all-nighter to get results, I didn't do any night fishing at all.
Can anyone do me a favour and confirm the wrasse types? Surely they're not all Ballan with the colour ranges, some corkwings there too?

yep they are all ballan,s they all have a different shade of colour depending on what habitat they live in, if that makes sense :?

They were all taken at the same mark, in fact all within a 3m radius, in the rocky mark which is shown in the accompanying mark shots.

all in a 3m radius - thought they are very territorial - thats a good result

well done some nice wrasse there
they are all ballans.
i dont they are supposedly territorial but me and a mate had 25 wrasse from a spot the end of a gully that was about 5m in radius, all decent size too so they must congregate to some extent

I was fishing into a sandy gully alright so I think they may come out to grab the rag then leg it again, three casts brought in three wrasse in a row at one stage so I think they must compete to some extent.

Males arre territorial when protecting the "nest" also more colourful as a rule although as indicated the "cover" has a biog impact on the colours - lightish ones definitely came from mixed ground with sand in patches...
