bishops quarter, clare, 20 april 07 and other exploits!

Fri Apr 20, 2007 11:25 pm

People: myself and 2 others

Duration: 18.30 to 21.15

Tide: high at 20.00

Weather: overcast, light wind to start, then a bit of mist - wind died and the misting stopped

Bait: lug and mack

Rigs: 3 and 2 hook flapper, pulley

Results: nada

Catch and Release:: No!

Report: was itching to get out - with no real destination in mind - one of the others suggested here - and why not - im still determined to catch in these non catching marks

anyway had the three rods out - one out 100yards - another 60-70 and another infront of us

had one decent bite at distance to mack on the turn of the tide on the pulley and then 3 bites each time on the top hook of the 3 hook flapper but no take!

i was getting into it at this stage - im so used to slow fishing at these venues - whereas for the other 2 the pub was calling

packed up and the mist got heavier - just as well 8)

heres to the continuation of my personal journey through the non - fishing venues of galway bay :?

well just to fill in on my blanking quest of north clare - south galway bay

two of us fished from 13.30 til 20.15

high tide bout 14.30 id say?

lug/mack/sandeel was the bait - and some surface spinning

very weedy on the seaward side at the beach as it was hitting high tide - started out with flappers and booms - but changed to 1 hook pulleys - weed was catching on the knots everywhere aswell as the odd bit fixed to boulders scattered amongst the sand

couple of hooks were cleaned - two rods at this side

on the landward side had - 2 hook flapper in there in the sandy shallows - something was cleaning me off the worm/mack - crabs - caught one about 20cms across

put in tobies and spinners - but no follows

then the landward side started to empty - hit the deeper water right at the point - again no bites - weed causing trouble

eventually round 17.00 had all rods on the front beach/rocks hitting sand - was fairly clear as the tide went out

searched around a few more spots - floated for a bit

in the end no fish!

but a beatiful day out - and red faces, arms all round!

so many varied marks in a small area - want to fish it again much earlier on the fill - on an evening tide etc. etc.

That's some serious dedication Mate, fair play to ye.... Keep the reports coming. Not all of us can fill reports with loads of Bass. Always nice to get out fishing on a nice day....

it was bound to happen!!!

so after all the blanks - we gave in - off to blackhead with us

the evening before - the 3 lads has hooked "something massive and white", a ray, apparently and i think a decent pollack

so 4 of us arrived at about 3pm

the sea was like glass - a points it was so calm it was missing as you looked to the horizon - eerie almost

one of the lads hoppped out in the wetsuit to have a look at the ground - pointing out the boulders - back to that later

anyway threw out a pulley with sandeel - mate had a 2 hooked up again with sandeel and squid

2 others had floats

within 20mins there - it was amazing - a porpoise swimming around right in front of us - only 40m away

a couple of fish were startled and jumped right out of the water!

they (i think there was more) hung around for 30 mins and werent seen again

anyway they didnt effect the fishing

mate was getting knocks on the squid/sandeel all the time - but wasnt getting them out of the water - his reel was getting worse - he managed to get one doggie out - shouldh have taken 3-4 more - before he gave up on the reel

i was getting nothing on mine - added the squid - still no joy

one of the lads floating - had interest on the first cast - with mussel - missed a hit or two - went to sandeel - no joy

then back to mussel more action - managed to hook one coalie - bout a pound - with his fish caught he promptly left!

there was a guy chucking feathers for about 1hour - to our left, no joy - that was the mack watch covered

we were hitting snags and realised there was only a channel of sand infront of us - not a few boulders - mate had lost a few rigs already

put on some nasty mack myself - and in came a large crab - seem to be managing one a session - and they are getting bigger everytime - bout 22cm across

at high tide no more doggie bites - so mate started jigging - got three pollack - 1 at 2 pounder

me lost a trace - put out more sandeel again on the pulley and on the other rod - put on the feathers - mack bashing revisited!

had one or two follows but no hook up - heard this lark of baiting the feathers - so did it - and am now converted - thought i had a large mack darting etc. - no! a 2 lb pollack - best fight off one in years 8)

it was now about 9 and almost perfectly - the only man not to catch got a good coalie around 2 pound on the float - and with the sun setting we packed up

a beatiful day again - great to be out - it was nice and quiet in blackhead - but there was some amount of rubbish - from anglers  - built up already

gathered what i saw around me - its a wonder clare co co dont have signs around etc. :?:

only a channel of sand??? how far were you casting? if you hit 50 yards at black head it is clean sand from there outward.

the particular spot we were at - had very large boulders on the right and then on the left as we found out

so an initial channel if you want to call it that
