Mackerel Reports for '07 here.....

Hello,
I think it would be a great resource for many SAI supporters to report the presence (or absence) of macks from shore all throughout the season in as close to real time as possible.
Not looking for any secrets here, just the type of info that someone driving by the bridge in Kinsale will know if s(he) sees mackerel being caught. This website gives a chance to have info feeding in from all over the country to one spot for the entire season.

Why?..
A better idea of where and when the macks are about might:
1. Increase chances of catching nice dinner
2. Tempt you to try fishing for them with a fly rod or very light gear
3. Allow you to bring nippers along, they'll NEVER forget catching the first mack
4. If it works it might mean less time fishing for bait (if the bait is mack)
5. it might mean less need to haul in loads at a time for bait for the freezer during the season
6. Use the info to avoid mack bashers (I have found the morning tide can be like a different planet, a quiet, safe one :) )
above are the 'selfish' reasons, other reasons are:
7. If supported it could provide an annual 'database' on mack stocks, allowing rough comparison from year to year
8. Might cut down on the need to take extra macks in a session, which is good for the fish.

(BTW reporting the presence or not of mack bashers might be a good idea during the high season, also reporting no macks would be just as important as reporting a catch)

I will continue to put reports of my attempts during the season ahead, I hope others will join in

tried hard all day for mack, out 12nms offshore, and inshore , brownstown nil, metalman nil,
hopefully they will arrive soon!!

I have stickied this as it is useful. BTW if you don't want to post an exact mark, post the locality (Loop Head, South West Wexford , etc etc)

2 mates fished the point beside portrush harbour on sat afternoon and caught 7 mackeral.. they are coming

Plenty around Dingle at the moment, any of the rock marks should hold them at dawn and dusk. Had approx 10 without trying for them over the weekend. One lad with feathers took over 30. Lean at the moment and one gutted held leaf's in its stomach..!

DOH...! How sad is that. What did I get teacher, a C- ..? :lol:

But yes one had leaf's in its stomach. It was my mate who was gutting it and called me over. We went through the rest of the stomach and found more..! Weird...!

Mackeral at Portush this morning..

if thats the petrol station/tackle shop just passed kinvara... i wouldn't rely on what they say to be honest...

Galway Bay - Never caught so many for little effort so early in the season.
Quantities from the shore too, I understand.

Just spotted mackeral breaking in Cork Harbour from my house. Have never seen mackeral breaks in the Harbour this early (mind you its like the middle of July at the moment). Plenty of activity between Frenche's Bay & the Spit Light, just on the edge of the channel.

Just had another look. Seems to be loads of them. Several breaks stretching for a mile into Cuskinny Bay.

Mackerel breaking in Cork Harbour, 25oC heat, unbroken sunshine, can someone check their GPS in case we have all drifted 300 miles south :shock: :shock: :shock:

Anyway I also heard of mackerel breaking in Clifden Bay at Easter, but they were not taking at all, so, anyone actually catching these ones in Cork from the shore??

macks trapped in galway docks...about 30 of them. wouldnt take anything though but they were deffo macks.

Got mackerel from boat out of Oysterhaven (oustide facing the sovereigns) in Cork, so tried for them in beside shore and got them there too, so no problem getting them from shore if you can get over the fields to them, suspect same story along coast. Plenty of them as well.

Any macks at Carrickfergus Co antrim yet.

Plenty of macks from the shore Galway Bay last two weekends also some nice pollock taken on well presented sandeel slow retrieve.
