Bait: Mackeral and sandeel

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Results: 4 flounder, 2 plaice, 2 brill

Report: Super day weather-wise so we took the short drive from Derry to Culdaff. Fished the left hand side of the beach where the river enters the sea. All of the fish apart from one of the flounder and one of the brill were on the smallish side, mainly fell to mackeral.

Was kinda hoping to land a sea-trout or two, but well chuffed with our first ever brill - one apiece for myself and the oul fella. I'm presuming they were brill and not turbot, as they has very sharp teeth in their strong mouths, and had a series of boney pertrusions along their backs, kinda like you would see on a thornback ray.

There seemed to be a few people over fishing on the pier too. Dunno how they got on right enough.

Beats lying around the house watching TV as I always say...

to the best of my knowledge brill are smooth on their back. My guess was that they were turbot.

I fished over below the pub yesterday and got a turbot and flounder (both smallish).

Didn't notice you over there Spurs_boy.

Sadly the Brill has become extremely rare in recent times. A smaller version of the Turbot, with bony protuberances down its back being the main difference in appearance

Should have said that my knowledge may not be the best! Was going by what i read somewhere else..

Culdaff normally turns up turbot.. and brill are V.rare. where they nearly round say compared to a flounder?

It was a very round shape, yes. And had very strong jaws with sharp teeth.

It was the series of boney pertrusions across it's back that got me wondering. Then I checked the species guide on this website, and according to that, these boney pertrusions are the main difference between a brill and a turbot.

I asked my Da to take a photo on my phone too, but it didn't save for some reason. I guess old people can't handle modern technology! Old dogs - new tricks and all that! :P
