Lug, frozen squid, mackeral and mussels.

The last night of my Christmas holidays and I needed consolation. My initial plan for a spell on the beach at Claycastle were battered by a howling south westerly gale. Plan B was the Quay in Youghal in the lee of some buildings, from the beneath the shelter of the hatch of my car with football on the radio in the background.

The result; three small codling on recently deceased lug tipped with squid, and three whiting, two fit for the pan, on mackeral tipped with squid. I love it when a plan B works :D .

Low water 3.30pm
Miserable day, with a strong onshore wind and the sea full of breakers.
We fished our first comp of the year (only 11 anglers), where all fish bar Bass are in if over 20cm (catch & release). 5 fish won, most were under 30 cm, only two decent fish caught a coddling and a coalie. One quy caught 2 Bass but both were under 43cm so did not count. Lets hope things improve by March (our next comp). The fishing is piss poor down at present, will those trawlers ever **** off.

East Cork Shore League 1st. Leg Youghal beach sun 16th. 16.00-20.00

32 anglers fished this comp. min. sizes for flats 25cm round fish 30cm.
I won comp with 5 cod (30,30,37,43,49) dropped three more good fish.
all the fish were taken at distance on crab in the last 2 hours. longers fish was a bass of 51cm this took second place. 12 other anglers had single fish, cod, coalfish and flounder. Daiwa tdxs 133m, abu sports mag loaded with 33lb. braid a licence to kill.

Fished the wall this afternoon one hour and a half to the top. Landed a few cod the best about 3.5 lbs. Lost two better cod on the ledge. To days lesson is don't use last weeks snoods. Gut hooked cod make **** of your snoods. A good few anglers fished the venue from low water with the big hitters using crab taken over a dozen nice sized (1.5lb. to 3.5lb.) cod.
A couple of new face appeared on the wall to day but not a sign of any new trawlers. I am now concerned that anglers will start to take my parking space which may result in having to send in misleading reports. Please note wine coloured citoen estates have first choice on parking.

Has it really been over four weeks since my last outing? Full of confidence Pat and myself arrived to see another 6 anglers there ahead of us. It didn't take long for the bites to kick in but unfortunatley they were all small coalies, whiting and codling (and bloody crabs). This continued until about an hour after the HT when the bites slackened off. This coincided with the current picking up. I was happy fish on as I believed that the bait being in the water longer was more likely to find something bigger. All the smallies must have headed for shelter. I also felt that the current would carry the scent further.

Anyway, a little later came a codling about 25 cm, returned. Soon after a walloping knock produced a fine coalfish of about 35 cm. A half an hour later again Pat caught a similar size coalfish.

To top off an enjoyable nights fishing Pat brought in a leader, rig and weight that I had cracked off earlier. I like this mark.

De wall is still fishing well. Fished sunday and monday with over 40 (forty) fish in the 2 sessions best cod just over 5lb. with most of the cod averaging 1.5 to 2lb.

Drove down from Dublin with m.b3 to fish "De Wall" on Saturday 05th Feb. Boy am I pleased we did!

We had over 50 fish between us on Saturday on a fairly small tide. Up to high water was very slow and we were wondering what all the fuss was about. With the arrival of Donal Domeney, however, everything changed. For those who haven't met him, Donal is quite a charismatic character and things suddenly changed on the fishing front. I went over to see him and the people who had gathered to see what size of fish he was wrestling out from the middle of the channel. A good 3lb plus cod is hawled form the sea. "It's all about the distance" he said. He then winds up and another small-baited pulley rockets off to the middle of the channel. Sure enough another bite and another fish comes in.

I returned to our spot with renewed vigour and we were soon hitting the mark around 120 plus yards out. From there on, it was nuts. A fish on most casts. A couple of times I had 2 fish on the same pennel pulley! Pouting, whiting and dab came in as well as the codling, but the codling were the most plentiful. I took Donals advice and put more anger into my casts, but I suffered later with aches from muscles I hadn't been using!! I had to drink a fair bit that night to soothe the pain.

Armed with a bit of a headache, Sunday was much slower with a bigger tidal race making it very difficult to keep bottom. Even at slack water and on the drop, the fishing wasn't the same. Nevertheless, we still managed around 20 plus fish between us.

Most of the fish went back and it was purely for the pleasure of fishing. I have never met such a bunch of great guys to be fishing with. Everyone was pleased to talk to you and share baits, stories and experiences. Donal even gave out a few of his special rigs - which DO WORK!!

just the odd fish off the east cork beaches, still a bit to early. I had my first sizable fish from Youghal this morning since christmas off the quay, 4 codling. The place has been full of tiddlers. All caught by the way on fresh razor.

Was that your usual disposable BIC razor or on of those new Gilette Mach 4s? :lol: :lol:

Fiashed de wall tuesday and wednesday evening. Fished the last 2 hours of the drop plenty of 30-45cm cod. Sadly the big seem to have all been caught yum yum.

FISHED DE WALL THIS AFTERNOON FOR 2 HOURS ONLY 1 SMALL COD. ANYONE PLANNING OF TRAVELLING D'NT. ANGLERS WHO FISHED THE FLOOD DID'NT LAND A HALF DOZ. COD BETWEEN THEM OVER THE 30cm. MARK. TRAWLED YESTERDAY FOR OVER 2 HOURS. SORRY FOR THE SHOUTING.

This was an open and fished on Easter Sunday 27/03/05 at Monatrea from 3 pm to 7 pm. High tide 7pm.
About 15 seniors and a couple of juniors.
Despite the bright sunshine, and a slight south easterly the fishing was good, depending upon where your were pegged. I think over 20 flounder were caught with an average size of 40 cm. 2 fish hit 46cm . The fish were spent and all were returned (catch and release policy). Its nice to see such quality fish and bodes well for the future that such good fish are in the esturary.
1st, 2nd & 3rd all got four fish and were pegged together so this was the hot spot on the day.

How long does it take for these spent fish to recover to a condition good enough to eat?

What do you mean by spent, all used up or used as a means to purchase something else???

I can't believe it's been over 8 weeks since my last trip. I'm not keen to go anymore without fresh bait and this is what happens. So in the dirtiest weather I have fished so far I spent a few hours with my mate Pat at the Deepwater in Cobh. No longer having my trusty Scenic, with its fabulous hatch, I had to brave the elements. We caught five codling and whiting between us all falling to the rag. I found the prawn and sandeel were being stripped also but they failed to catch anything. BY the way the rashers didn't work and I didn't use them. I only used the squid as a chewy morsel to prevent the other baits beig stripped too quickly.

A bit late reporting this but I was busy last week.

Pilmore - 17 April - 1-5pm. Full tide 12.00 noon.
A miserable day with a lots of rain and a south easterly to start, which moved to a westerly by the end of the comp.
I can't remember exactly but about only 9 fish were caught, all flounder (about 30-44cm in lenght). Crab was the only bait and fish were caught close in and at distance. Most of the fish were caught in the first hour as the tide dropped, but things went very quite thereafter and it was only in the last hour that a couple more fish were landed. 2 fish was enough to win.
