perhaps at some point up the river where the fresh water becomes to strong for the smaller fish it would act almost like a wall or a barrier and it would make it easy pickings for the cod as the whiting wouldnt go up the river any further so they would be trapped in essense.

Methinks a small whiting caught between the gape of a cod and swimming a wee bit further upriver into fresher water... will swim like stink! :D

Its nearly up at the main bridge into the city and some of the lads were catching them further up at the Guinness Brewery.I cant explain it but there is an awful lot of sea water runs up the river. We used to catch cod 15years ago from the Pink Rock in New Ross and thats another 20miles up along the road.I have a feeling by the color of some of the fish that they were "hanging around" the river as they were a lot browner than others.Or maybe its something from the brewery thats attracting them    But obviously they can tolerate some amount of fresh water or they wouldn't be there in the first place.Interestingly enough a few mates fished same spot as we did on Saturday 3 days after on the exact same tide and only got one fish each   .The only difference was the wind was Northerly and the tides were much higher :? :? :?

had 2 cod from the river on friday night. both were very very pale. both had an awful lot of prawn/shrimp in their bellies, which from what i understand favour a brackish water

if theres a 1000 whiting in front of him he might not be able to swim like stink

I think with all the marine life in the mud in this river it attracts alot of all kinds of fish, it's full of mullet Flounder eels and guess what, occasional BASS!
Nobody fishes there other than Winter time for cod but it's full of fish if you put in the hours! Not just cod down there. Some good shopping trollies too, but they are more seasonal. :D
General water quality has improved I believe so everything seems to be doing well. Good to see too.
However even if i did eat fish ( i don't) i wouldn't eat anything out of it regardless.

Angus, keep on posting mate, forget about that lot, everyone practises catch and release most of the time, but some people seem to think it needs to be rammed down everyones throat at every opportunity. Sod them keep on posting some of us are interested and understand that fishing is about catching and eating fish primarily and not stroking our eco-egos.

Hi,
fished the river near the hospital on a friends boat on 27th, fished ebb tide for 3 hours and the begining of the flood, had 5 nice codling 3-5lbs, some nice flounder also, only had a couple of fish on the drop, but 4 fish on the bounce just as the tide started to move in.
lug tipped squid the bait, had crab, not interested!! though all fish full of shrimp and small crab, all were in fine plump condition. lots of small fish on surface of the river, not sure what they were.
Oh, and on the way from dunmore east up river at creadan head, there were large pods of bottlenose dolphins having a feeding fenzy on the large shoals of herring! also seals everywhere you looked, one popped up beside the boat with a very large fish, not sure what it was, but looked like a salmon, took the seal 2 mins to skin it and swallow whole
regards
screeming

No it wasn't Paul, everything was fine until the eco evangelists started on.
Generally it's a pretty selfish crew, who have no wish to preserve fish stocks for any other reason than having future sport, THEIR sport, don't let them kid you that fish welfare plays any part of it, or they'd give up fishing rather than pointlessly torturing fish if that was the case.
So ignore it if you should so choose, and keep posting fish, a trawl does a lot more indiscriminate damage in one run than a sustainable rod and line fisherman.
The debate's been had before but they should really keep it out of the catch reports section, in fact there should be a mod ruling on that to be honest with bannings, but that'd just be my humble opinion, either that or they disable posting of pics to the catch forum, a simple update to the charter would do either.

WELL!
seen as the last few posts seem determined to keep this one going - im not going to sit idily by
as equal your arguments are for telling the the C+R crowd to shut it - you have to shut yours too
if you want action from the mods etc. - it has to be fair and go both ways - youve had your slaggin and views here and no one else has come in for whatever reason
frankly most people are tired of the constant cycle - but theres something here about having the last laugh
another thing i take exception to is this treehugging/eco etc. BS
im no treehugger - im a scientist - and if im telling you one thing its because its a researched area of publication - not some bandwagon hopped on
there is a world of difference between a tree hugger and an eclogist for instance
back to the fishing - if you want mods to interveene then youll have to pipe down also
for instance someones avatar might have to be changed - if we were going to be so fair across the board
might is not right

People know and understand the message, it's sickening people and putting them off posting to have to listen to the same broken record from the same people all the time.
C&R has it's place, but it's not really in a catch report section where people will do what they want, the reality is that people will just stop posting.
Same reason for the avatar, but I suspect the irony is lost on you.
