here is a link for all those who don't know how a sea becomes a sea trout ie:sandman
http://www.atlanticsalmontrust.org/seat ... trout.html

so this guy could telling the truth :?:

Rising to the bait, I'll quote from the page referenced above.

Migration downstream takes place in April, May and early June.

I'll grant that it's possible this one was a brown trout washed out of a river in flood, although as they're decent swimmers, I doubt that. And I'd be the first to admit that there is a lot about almost every species that we don't fully understand.

But if you persist in trying to back up Damager's excellent yarn, you'll only end up with both your foot and that hook, line and sinker I mentioned earlier stuck in your mouth, and you'll look like a pretty queer fish then, especially if you try to justify a healthy pike population off Rathlin.

Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:15 pm

did i mention once that i said you could or back up his story about catching pike in salt water .
your very easy to wined up alright but it seem that you enjoy slagging people off more for telling you about fishing report i have to agree with you on the pike issue but the trout thing can be explained no :?:

Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:30 pm

I'm going with the boat on this one - the general consensus here seems to be that it's all a wind-up.

As I said, I could grant the guy his trout - as they say, stranger things happen at sea, but the pike thing pushes the whole story firmly into the 'suspect' category.

Mind you, if it was a brown trout and it was caught at sea, he could probably make a record claim....

Since there's been no further word from the man himself maybe we'll never know. At the end of the day, if he's happy he caught a pike and a brown trout at sea, I'm happy for him.

Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:50 pm

fully understand sandman you can keep the story about the pike going alright do

Fri Nov 25, 2005 6:00 pm

All good for a laugh. We need more yarns like that. Great milage and scope for slaggin in it.

Right, must go. Might even get a line in the water Sunday. You never know, I might get my first shore-caught pike!

Hello once again

Sandman wrote:Oh no, you're right. I can see this one run and run. I'm waiting for yer man to tell us what sort of a boat he was out in.

The only other thing that even comes close to this was one time a good few years ago, I was fishing out from Rathlin in a six foot Dinghy, just out from Ballycastle and I landed a 37 Pike, whilst jigging for cod, that was an epic fight.

There you are, and thanks for being happy for me Sandman, and not trying to prove or disprove the events that occurred on that faithful night, seems there's a lot of people can't just be happy for a man, but, I can take it in my stride. Who was asking about the bait ? it was sand eel.

There really is no disputing the fact that I The Intrpid Damager caught a Brown Trout from Portmuck, the real question is how did it get there ?

I have caught other strange things, one night from Donaghadee, A Friday Night, or perhaps a Saturday, anyway the pub singer was in full flow, a bit of Roxette, Dire Straights, he was just getting to his Oasis half hour, nothing much was happening, so I reeled in to change my bait, can't remember what I was using now, maybe squid after having no luck with the raggies, anyway, nothing but weed, lay it down to take off the weed, it was a brown almost netted type of weed, the pub singer was on wonderwall now, must have been finishing with Oasis, and the weed looked as if it was moving. So I poked it a bit with my foot, and sure enough, a wee Pycnogonid. I was just wondering if K2xtrm has ever caught any Pycnogonids ? I have never caught any anywhere else.

As for not being on in a while, that's because I've been out fishing, I like it when its cold.
So if I get time, if, I might post another shore angling report. As for the Pike, well there's only a few that can.

well done sir. [humour the lad I think the operative word in his reply is weed..........?]

I'd often seen pycnogonids - when fishing pots they often clambered slowly out of the pots - never knew exactly what they were. Always assumed they were juvenile spider crabs or such like. Amazing what you can learn on here....didn't think any lounge singer could do a creditable Dire Straits, Oasis and then Roxette either....

My hat's off to the Damager, obviously a man of science...

jigging for cod with a sandeel and cathching pike?
i thought u used a pirk for jigging but sandeels? and wat is a pych. . .. dat tint he got a donghadee

Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:32 pm

just a thing bout the pike in s-water. read Saltwater Flyfishing: Britain and Northern Europe. in it its says that they regurally fish for pike in the fjords in norway. considering fjords tend to have as high a salinity as the then apparently pike can live in salt water.

Getting back to the "brown trout" for all of you who dont know the area there are no rivers within 4 miles of Portmuck only a few very small sheughs so I dont see where the slob trout could have come from. The Inver and Glynn are both shallow spate rivers and would be the closest they both have a head of small brownies and do see quite a lot of smallish sea trout.
