Well said Boycie...Now lets work this out.17 Codling 34 Fillets..I kept 8 for me the wife and 2 kids..the mate kept 16 fillets for himself the wife and 6 kids...We gave 8 to an old age pensioner who loves to eat fish but can't afford it.The other four fillets were given to a mate.Now lets work the cost of these trips.6 Trips to Waterford and Youghal.Diesel € 300.00.Bait € 240.
Food etc € 100.00 we blanked pretty much on 5 of these trips :x except the last one :D :D .So I think I'm pretty much entitled to take these fish.Not one of them went to waste and we fed a lot of people.Oh and If I was living in Waterford i'd be more worried about the Guys who are longlining and netting then us poor anglers.We probably wont get another days angling like that again.Any way thanks for all your comments I can see everyones argument !!!

Have to agree with ye barry! well said! It just seems that some people think depletion in fish stocks is a fairy tale and that they can continue to indiscriminently kill what ever they catch. Lets be honest when the cod are thick in the river it takes :shock: very little skill to catch them, I know i grew up on the river and cut my teeth cod fishing. I find pictures of dead fish like the ones posted just a bit dissapointing and pointless. I personally was dreading some one posting the fact the cod where in the river as I knew what would happen! So good point Barry and fair play to you, cod are under the same pressure as bass if not even greater, so how bout putting a few back!!!!!

Fifteen Guys fished the river on Sat in a comp and as far as I know everyone more or less blanked :shock: :shock:

Here here Jolly good days fishing when they are on the run you get them there and then same off the rock marks in Clare we dont take much fish one or two but when they are in they are in force.

A few years ago in Doolin in a v dangerous rock mark they were even falling to mackerel strips sometime two at a time.

Its good to see the Cod back in waterford but watch out for the ones wth BLISTERS not nice .

well if its all about the cost maybe you shouldnt travel fishing is ment for enjoyment and no worries.fair enough the fish where used but so are the fish trawlers take do we as anglers agree with that. i do not mean this to be an attack on paul i picked up when i read this report that people seemed it was ok to take a big catch of cod and the sane people would kick up if it was bass,this form normally promotes conservation??fair enough as someone said trawlers do tons more damage but we can not as anglers blame them and be irasponcale to fish stocks our self's. this is all im saying on this.

Can see all points on this 1 lads, it was a great days fishing by any standards and sometimes you get days like that. There are days you blank and wonder where all the fish are and that's the way it goes. If anyone is prepared to post pics on here they should expect and take the positive and negative comments that go with it. Everyone dosn't agree all the time on these issue's and that's fine too.

if this type of keep ratio was regular ie 2 days a week etc it would be an issue but given there were 6 trips involved to hit the jackpot it balances the catch rate out a bit.

Fair Play to the captor for his honesty and taking the comments and ditto to Barry for speaking his mind!

the torrent of abuse is putting alot of people off. have a look at the reports forum and you will see that its the same people that are posting reports. many many many other users wont post reports, myself included or if i do they are generally very quick ones cos its not worth the hassle of having to defend yourself.

people seem to think that if you go to the effort/cost of getting bait, tying rigs, traveling hours to go fishing that you have no right to hold on to a few. usually the same posts are recycled from the holier than thou crew who try to brainwash everyone into catch and release. if i want to put a fish back i will (and more often than not, i do) but if occasionally i want to keep one, back off, i dont need a sermon

If people still want to give out why dont ya's start a new post?? its recking all the shore reports. or send the person a PM its kind of putting a negative vipe to the site.

Everyone can't all agree all the time and never will it won't happen!

So, 1 simple solution, if it's only good feedback you want for your pic keep it to yourself.

If you're not prepared to take the critisism don't put it up and send it to whoever wants to see it!

the mods - need to just post a link of the last debate and if youve anything to add post there - so each time it gets nipped in the bud - and the ol debate can go off in whatever tangents it wants in some sticky etc.

and the the report can go back to tactics, bait etc.

its not as if any of these debates really state anything new most of the time

there was one about a month or two ago that did have some good scientific articles quoted etc.

so if it really is seen as bringing the site down - at least the debate will be in a place of its own - and all knives can be drawn and more importatnly the same stuff isnt written over and over and over again

look lads its simple, everyone has a right to a few fish when there in. no one is saying they are not but there is a thing of a few fish for the pot and pure greed.if there was 4 or 5 fish nothing would of been said.i didnt put in a reply to start an argument but i was surprised because if they were bass the same people who are getting defensive at my post would be bitching. hypocrites. the thing of people not posting because of negative replies is bull,i know a lot of people who wont put in there reports because if they do the next night there will be every tom,dick and harry at there spot, and with some people out there taking everything ,marks dont be long getting fished out. look at the way competition fishing size limits been dropped because of diminishing fish stocks. its time people woke up and look at the state of our fish stocks.

We give him some fish everytime we get a few (which these days is rare enuf) and by god does he appreciate it.

Me and the wife and kids had ours the other day done in beer batter and it was better than any chipper :D :D :D

Deadly recipe for cod, especially fresh...grilled cod ,back pudding mash and hollandaise sauce, or even a buerre blanc would be nice too...absoutly delicious

There are a couple of good points made on this thread.
In relation to one of them and the "Bass hypocrites", yes when I saw the pic I was saddend to see so many Cod kept when they too are in danger but as was also pointed out there is allot of criticism when an angler posts a pic and for this reason I was refraining from posting my comments on it.
I dont want to be seen as only complaining when I post and I do try to help out other anglers when I can.

Bottom line is that its down to the individual. Like I have said before we all have to do our part to conserve fish stocks. Would it make it ok if it was 20 Pollock..? I still think no but thats a personal opinion.

On another thought...
Has anyone wondered why the Cod go so far up the river in the first place..?

Lack of natural food or easier pickings in the river..? Freshwater mussel bed..? Crab Beds..? Just curious.

Myself and the mate were only talking about that very subject yesterday.A couple of theory's 1) Some of them had a lot of small whiting in them which were very fresh ie not decomposed but some of them had a lot of very small crab in them.The ones that had the small crab had no whiting and vice verse.So is it safe to assume some have a preference for whiting and some for crab :shock: This led us to believe they are there feeding on small fish.. crabs.However a lot of the cod had nothing in there stomachs but maybe this is just because they were only in from the sea.The river seems to be a breeding ground for small whiting and crab and this is what is attracting the cod :?: :?: We think !!!!
2) Could it be they are spawning in the river :?: :?: We couldn't answer that one !!!

Thats interesting...! How far up river is it..? If you dont wont to say just PM me. I was just wondering how much brackish water cod could handle and in fact if they would tolerate more fresh water in the pursuit of baitfish. Are they swimming in with the tide or do you think they are residential.?
Are the witing driven up there by the cod or is there a warm water outflow thats attracting them.

I heard this kind of thing for the first time about 3 years ago and the impression I got was that it was pretty far up river.
