Shore Mackerel Reports '14 here...

Mackerel are still all around cork harbour, we had plenty today although saying that today was the first day that I got to see how small the joeys are, 99% went back, the 1% were keepers.

Can mackeral be caught at night?

From my experience in the last hour of daylite they are feeding like mad and you are pulling in six at a time and as soon as it gets dark you stop getting them. I dont know if they cant see the feathers in the dark or wheter they are full up and stop feeding. I know flatfish and cod etc can see worm in the dark but the mackerels eyesight could be different. The feathers that glow in the dark would probaly be the best. I only caught a very odd mackerel in the dark

I know that spot, usually catch them on the float at night there Pollock too.

Just driven over kinsale bridge , about 6 guys fishing there , saw a few coming up as I drove over and drove past a guy walking off the bridge with a bucket full of mackerel

Lads I am so sick of the "usual" marks in Cork being absolutely packed and, at times, dangerous. I would really appreciate it if someone could put me onto a (relatively) quiet spot with a few mackerel about that I'm not going to get decapitated. If the mark is more suitable for spinning than feathering (due to snaggy ground etc) that's no problem.

Obviously people might be reluctant to say their "spot" here so a PM would be great. I'm mainly a bass angler so I know the value of secrecy and won't go sharing this with the world.

Fri 12th Sept 7:30 pm-ish, lots of very small ones being caught right by the wall at Rostellan opposite Neptune kayaking place. Also being caught right up a Saleen creek. They only stopped when it got dark. About 1 in 10 were keepers but sadly a lot of tiny ones were being kept as well (some not even being killed, just thrown into plastic bags). One of these days they'll be fished out and everyone will be crying about it.

From places i have been so far, youghal is pretty quiet easily fished without someone tangling you, helvik near dungarvan also was quiet enough anytime i have been there. And dunmore East down by waterford usually see maybe 10 fishermen for such a big dock is quiet. Hope this helps somewhat.

Same shite here. I don't use feathers just spin for them much better fun.

Seen groups of people with f@@king buckets big f@@king buckets full of little joeys which will be thrown away as there not regular anglers just jumping on the Mackeral fir the craic

Problem with spinners is the huge trebles which inevitably will rip the jaws off a baby mack. They will happily try and swallow a lure as big as themselves. At least feather rigs usually have single hooks.

Only messing, try behind James fort in Kinsale and the rocks leading up to the golf course on the old head .
In bantry head up the sheeps head peninsula, plenty of places to park at side of rd dozens of rock marks between the airstrip and the fish processing plant.
I went to the pier near the fish processing plant a month or so ago I had over 40 Pollock up to 3/4 lb in just under an hour an a half, all went back , fish the end of pier, silver feather's will do the trick, cast to the left of the bouy on the rocks, if you time the tides mid to high tide close to dusk should get you at least one a cast if your lucky.
