I have fished for mackerel in Fenit for 15 years. This year has been the worst so far. In previous years I filled refuse sacks & could not give them away. The only macies being caught (very few) are with rigs with size 1 hooks tipped with a tiny piece of "mackerel" (leave the feathers at home). Plenty of room to fish (I wonder why) Must get a boat
pegleg peggy wrote:I was in Fenit, Kerry last week. Mackeral fishing at the pier was desperate, i.e not a bite. Driving down the pier you never saw so many miserable lookiing faces in your life. I asked at the Beach Shop and the fella there said its been like that for the past two years, and he blames it on the large number of whales in the area (okay, that I don't mind) and the trawlers (that, I mind A LOT!).
In previous years when I fished there you could always count on a few stringfuls on the incoming tide and you;d have to get there early for space. As one aul'fella said to me, there were times you could practically dip a bucket in and pull them up.
Anyone got any good macky spots in the area from Tralee up to Banna? We're going down the last week of Auguat.

Was fishing up in ''blackhead'' under the lighthouse at whitehead middle of august.
Plenty of Mackerel and i mean plenty. Went with my bro we caught atleast 13-14 each and no word of a lie they wer being caught on bare hooks.
There was plenty of people about around the rocks and the others around were there from early morning right up til we left which was around 7pm. The mackys were flying in. Plenty of sandeel just below our feet so that was the aubvious reason.
Good day for catching mackerel was hoping for wrasse or pollack no luck though.

Venue: Kinsale, Co. Cork
Date: 17th Sep
Time: 16.30
Tide: 1.5 hrs around high tide
Weather: settled, gentle easterly breeze
Rig: silver toby, luminous krill imitation rig
Results: mack on two casts in 1.5 hours (6 mack was ok though)
Thank God I have a report at last. I was hoping to get a lot of macks this evening all to be put to very good use. I probably arrived a bit late, nothing at all happenend once the tide turned.
There were people fishing the bridge but macks didn't seem too plentiful. Hopefully we'll get a good turnout over the rest of this fine spell.
Give us a last snap shot from around the country............

Lure fishing for bass yesterday evening (HT at 16.45) at rock mark on the Ring peninsula using various lures, shallow feed , patchinko's etc , not much action only a couple of follows, as soon as light faded Macks in large numbers hitting the shallow diving lures, four of us took about twenty in 15 mins it was nearly a fish a cast had to change over to single hook lures as there was lots of doubles and foul hooking going on. Might try at Helvick tonight should be there too around dusk.

Here's one for ya. Checked the quays along Cobh tonight. Lads fishing for macks were picking up codling and not mini cod at that. These fish were all about 1- 2lbs, maybe 30 - 40cm, in size.

Hello,
Fished for a little while near the bridge at Youghal.
Using krill imitation got a string of small coalies on every cast, the place was teaming with them.
Interestingly there were regular passes below my feet of macks, but none showed interest in this lure that normally doesn't fail.
The evening was lovely, was about 1 hour post HT.
Might try Kinsale over the weekend, very last chance to stock freezer???
