good to hear you guys got off safe....but you really should have checked the tides before you went on it especially at dark, even in calm conditions it can change very quickly up here, and you must keep an eye on them all along and be prepared for a speedy and safe exit.
fair dues to the coastguard being on hand as ever and the local lifeboat crew in portrush as well, they are an extremely busy station and well worthy of a good donation from each of you guys after that....

That's a good idea, some lads on the WSF forum doing these events regularly to raise funds for the local RNLI stations.

Like Phil said even in calm conditions the situation can change very quickly on Ramore Hd. I had planned to fish it this weekend, but after looking at the swell charts decided against it as the swells were given as 15.5ft on Fri night and 10.5ft on Sat, although the winds were light, and with the fairly high tides you shouldn't have gone near it.
You are lucky lads and owe your lives to the bravery of the Coastguard and the lifeboat crew.

Hope that is a reminder and a lesson to all of us that the sea is not to be taken lightly.

thats the thing phil we had decide to fish it for 2hrs at low water for conger then move to the blue pool as we where packin up it was fine then as we got to the sewer pipe it started just spotted it coming in then it hit the rocks and if we, sam or alan had to been climbin up we'd have been away with the tide didn't plan on stayin in the dark....but yes i would be well up for a compo for the RNLI and the COASTGUARD....they are life savers and i have a far greater respect for them all after this weekend

the sea is a deadly place if your not careful i can remember 4 years ago that i was fishing cushendun beach and there was 4 or 5 freak waves came up to the wooden sleepers. scary me and the mate were down the beach at the edge of the water the tide was half way out scary lost a tripod and rod and reel and nearly drowned :oops:

the R.N.L.I. do a very good job and i think its time they got recognized for there work most people that are in it have full time jobs Doctors and carpenters ect. and i think that this fishing comp would be a good idea

I recall Pat aka Sandman proposing a "virtual comp" at one stage. I think the idea was to set a day and everyone fished for 3 or 4 hours or whatever with another forum member and posted your results up at the finish. Anyone fishing pays an entry fee and the proceeds go to the lifeboat lads. Cant remember why it didnt happen. :?

If our own sponsors are unwilling, I will happily sponsor a prize for this.

well as for funding good to see idea grow.

Count me in. as for regional great idea also. if all areas pick a date close we can all post results and amouts raised would be good to see the ultimate angler crowned lol

you guys were very luck ,i was watching the commution from the other side of the bay (tucked up nice and warm in a cottage ) I thought it was an excercise with the lifeboat /coastguard .
There was a fair swell running most of the weekend up there ,i'm suprised you were able to fish that place at all ,the rocks in front of cottage were being covered by nearly every wave .
Davy and i nearly got stuck climbing that area you got hoisted up :oops: the same thing happened us with the swell ,but we decided to climb out .
I like the idea of a fund raiser for the RNLI ,maybe a paired roving one around the portrush area .a match ruler supplied to each team ,numbered so that any photos taken for size/ species count .most people have camera phones and the rulers could be sponsored by some of the local tackle shops .

good idea ronald, safety in pairs and witnesses for fish as well wherever you decide to go.
perhaps left to a random pairs comp in portrush area for ulster guys during the summer?
pairs drawn on the morning?
anywhere between portrush harbour and blue pool?

i think i will stick to the point for that compo....ronald when we got there that was the last thing you would have though that would happen cause it was like a sheet of glass when we arrived....but anyway i am most deffo up that compo

Of course i'm glad to see you got off safely. But were you mad? Spring tides rising into the dark and large swell coming in all weekend :shock:

I was brought up in Portrush and fished the head for many years . As many as 40
Have witnessed a club member being washed in whilst fishing a club outing , during the day ! by a freak wave , all worked out well the RNLI
Inflateable to the rescue. Know all the guys well , glad to hear it all worked out well . Well done Rescue Service :lol:
