I hate to be the bearer of bad news. This morning a green trawler is trawling right in front of the quays at Cobh. It's only a matter of time before he moves upto Monkstown.

....I've seen that bloody trawler a good few times down there over the last few years :evil: i wouldn't let it stop anybody coming down as I'm sure there are plenty of other marks that can be fished :)

has anyone tipped off the Fisheries officers?

It isnt doing anything illegal though is it?

Didn't think he could be so close to shore but then again I'm not familiar with Monkstown, or the rules so if I'm wrong apologies to the trawler!

Not sure Kstaff, perhaps someone could clarify what rule there is, if any regarding this. Also, what law if any applying to the positioning of fixed nets in the same area....

My understanding is that trawling in allowed within the harbour by boats up to a certain size (though I have never seen any byelaw etc). I enquired once about netting in areas such as Monkstown (cod) and Rostellan (mullet). I was assured that once the fisherman has a licence then there is nothing illegal unless the fisherman is in posession of either salmon (out of season) or bass.
"That green boat" (D475) has been trawling all over the harbour for years. He is not alone. He usually gives it a break during the summer when he goes salmon fishing off Power Head (one wonders what he'll do next year). I've seen him trawl at the top of East Ferry and as far up as Blackrock Castle.

To see the bycatch of juvenile fish discarded by the "harbour trawlers" after each tow is both unbelieveable and sad.

It is clear here that the welfare of the few is being considered ahead of the welfare/enjoyment/sport of the many, not to mind the welfare of the fish! There is no political will there at the moment to do anything about conservation in the harbour (a scientifically proven nursery area).

The possibilities of revenue generated by angling alone in the harbour region are immense. This could be all year round.

Can you imagine how much of a mecca the Cork harbour area would become should there be a ban on commercial fishing within the harbour? The charter business would go through the roof, people would travel from afar to avail of the shorefishing..... Is it too much to ask that the handful of lads who rape the place on a daily basis buggered off and did something else? In any other event, majority vote rules, its incomprehensible in this day and age that one man can have such an effect on the happiness and enjoyment of others in pursuit of his livelihood.

If I caused so much annoyance and frustration to so many people and deprived so many others, charter skippers, hoteliers, B & B owners, tackle dealers, local shops etc of the chance to improve and drive their business I'd be shot. Plain and simple. Why on earth do they let this happen?

I didn't realise I'd cause such a furore over my comments yesterday. However, I'd better clarify a few things. The green trawler was not D475. In fact it was much bigger. D475 is only a half decker and is probably a bit smaller than most charter boats. This trawler had a white stripe and was 2 to 3 times the size of D475. In fact I haven't seen it that often. Whatever, about D475 trawling in the harbour boats of this size should definitely confine their activities to outside.

get the dole inspectors on to them, most deckhands workin on inshore trawlers, are drawing the dole (illegal)
also a lot of the fish they land are undersize(illegal)
the same goes for the salmon driftnetters, if a check up was done it would show that most were drawing the dole, while d.netting (working.illegal/fraud)

Just wondering,but isn't down by Monkstown a main shipping channel,I've seen the Cork harbor pilots(think thats what their called) chasing off idiots running too close to ships before, surely a trawler would also be considered dangerous in the same area :?

Bait: Fresh Crab, Black lug, Squid, Mack.

Results: 2 codling, countless pout, whiting and poor cod.

Met up with the two lads for the proposed cod hunt. Unfortunately, the codling refused to play ball. Not surprising really though considering the place is being trawled to sh1te and there are other netters on the scene also..... :evil: However, every bit as importantly, it was disappointing to see along the length of the wall the number of people with a pile of little codling/whiting etc beside them. Also, the number of small dead fish floating on the surface along the length of it was disappointing too. No point complaining about trawlers if, as anglers, our own house isnt in order......

First cast out with a nice peeler crab resulted in a small codling of 2lbs or so for myself. A false dawn however as although fish came thick and fast with an abundance of whiting, pouting and poor cod all making their presence felt. I had one more codling, a smaller fish of maybe 1.5lbs or so in between the scrappy stuff. I lost a heavier fish however in the reef 20 yards out or so, I just couldnt get his head up when coming i to the shore. I'd forgotten how galling it is to lose a decent fish like that....having to pull for a break at the finish. :(

Still, uninspiring the fishing may have been, it was good to hook up with the two lads. Will see yous for the Courtmac trip on Sunday.

Anyone thinking of travelling a distance to fish De Wall, at the minute, its a bit hit and miss and I wouldnt be recommending it.
