smelt, its a good pike bait, I use it regularly for pike

Your pic of the smelt has helped me identify the fish I took from the gut of a codling I caught back in November, the fish was about 6" in length very skinny with a forked tail.

A friend of mine caught one of these two weeks ago glad to be able to put a name to the little bugger :)

What colour is their flesh if its white it was a smelt alright, I thought it was a herring at the time and I started to use them as bait on one of the hooks , I might bait up a hook with smelt next time to see what happens :) , its usually prawns, shrimp and crab id find in their guts when cleaning them out, i wouldn't at all catching one to add to the species list

Thats not the first smelt to come out of that estuary .... every time i fish there i get at least one of them .... nice few species and nice report well done
