Cracking eel man well done on pulling it out. Braver man then me! Nice pics too the wee lad looks like he had a ball.
Hi dfella,
thanks for response. Yea it was nice for the wee lad. I thought it was very very big when I viewed it first on the bottom, magnified through roughly 12 foot of water, it was the thickness of it that stood out. That was 1.5hours before I had it in my hands out of the water. Even the pounder coley we were catching below us looked like much better fish, when viewed through so much water.
The above quote of mine you selected is not a response to Brians question. I said that to Dave in mad
excitment when I first saw the thing way down in the water. It looked enormous, due to magnification, 12 foot down. That was an hour and a half before I hooked it.
When Dave got it into the net I said what you reckon Dave, 12lb? Dave said I think its a bit bigger than that. The scales go up to 15lb, it was a bit more than the scales could read.
###BRIAN I dont really know but I would say probably not more than 18lb and possibly only 16lb but I'm guessing, the spring balance did slow a bit as the wee guage reached the 15lb mark but it was hard to the base of the scale, so I dunno exactly.
I was hoping someone might be able to tell from experience roughly what a 51" eel should weigh?????
Cheers, Cathal.
Will do proper responses soon to all.
The above was a complete misunderstanding, my mistake, pardon me Conor.
Cathal.

Well done guys, some cracking fishing by the looks of it. The wee man looks like he is having a blast, that's what it's all about.

Dunno how to do the multiple quotes thing in one response! Dawsey cheers, the wee lad loves his fishing, when His Father (Dave) and him get back from Holland we will give it another bash.
Alan, thanks for that, sorry for delay in responding, I'd say you are right re the weight, prob closer to the 14 you suggest than the 18? I put on my signature! The fish, which was in a landing net weighing 1lb 7oz(when wet) pulled the scales right to the bottom which said 15b.
I should have mentioned the net weight before now! Sorry. Yeah I think I can forget worrying that I had a 20lber not weighed right. Zud25's conger recently posted was a good bit longer than mine and it was 19lbs.
Thanks for the info, I think I'll just say my fish was around the 15lb and I might get away with that.
Cathal.

Fine haul of fish lads. Well done to the young lad on getting in on the action. I've had congers as heavy as 22 lbs but the heaviest one i caught was in no way the longest. I've had ones that were longer that me and i stand at 5ft 8in. But they were not always that well fed and only weighed in at 18 lbs. It's hard to judge just by length, but by looking at your photo I reckon he's between 15 and 16lbs. Well done on a fine eel.

Evan,
Thanks for that info, and estimate, I kinda thought eels would be hard to judge by length alone, most species are but its not that important what the actual weight was. I must get a set of digital scales for the future as recommended by by Alan.
Thanks again.
