This year they never left, there was plenty of bass about in January and February off the East Cork beaches.

There was bugger all in Dec  ....Mike Thrussell posted up a good theory on one of his blogs about the impact of continuous frost on inshore fishing. Its very relevant.

I had a few smallish ones in December at low tide off the beaches, although I was actually targeting cod at the time as the bigger codling seemed to have moved out of the estuary in Youghal.

If they don't it wont be for lack of trying on my part :)

I know this is true for cod also, thing is this time of year when things can be a bit slower if your just fishing big baits you can tend to blank more often which I hate. Thats why I always fish with one big pennel and a smaller bait on a two hook rig just in case.

Cheers seanie, if I had one half the size of your personal best this year I would be doing well

Cheers Dennis, I remember you were saying they wouldn't be back in for a while a few weeks ago but as rockhunter is saying and a few people who fish the east cork beaches they were hanging around all winter, ok, maybe not in huge numbers but they were there all the same....

Indeed yourself and Rayor2 proved that by getting a few over winter  .
