You seem to be catching a high percentage of your Bass from quite close in, it just goes to show that there's no need all of the time for casting long distances,

Thanks Paula, all of the bass I have caught this year have been in very close. Just as well since I am not great at distance casting, although over the last year my distance has improved, but my bass totals for 2010 were well down on 2009 - partly due to a sore foot over the summer but as well I think I was probably casting over the fish.

I don't normally fish there - but as I arrived so late I just set up the rods on the first bit of beach I reached, as the tide dropped I noticed there was a bit of a gulley in front of me which is where I was picking up the bass.

Thanks Ray, the conditions on Sunday were ideal, although with this return to cold calm frosty conditions may have put an end to it for a while

Fairly intensive fishing there Frank! Great results for 2 and 3 hour sessions. If my sessions were as productive I reckon I would spend less time freezing my socks off and my other half would see me a bit more. When I do go out its half a day planned, and sometimes wasted :( .

I suppose its the difference in knowing what marks to fish, when to fish, what tides etc. I'm picking up some good info from these posts and by fishing marks new and old under different conditions, so future sessions could possibly be better :D

Cheers Frank, Keep up the good work, well, maybe work is the wrong word....

How right you are, how right you are.......I remember one fruitless plugging session returning along a shingle beach only to spot a large bass in the shallows. It couldn't have been any closer, its snout was almost out of the water, resting up on the gutter. I couldn't help but reflect that in my attempts to hit the horizon, not only was I overshooting the fish, but spooking those that were almost certainly at my feet!

Great fishing Frank, High tide or Low tide,,,,,,,,,,,it doesnt seem to matter , and now the bass themselves are providing you with your lug supply

Thanks Al, I got spoilt with the good codling that were around Youghal in October and November - then you would throw back a 1.5 lb codling in disgust

Thanks Gerry, yes I wasn't expecting them to be around until March at the earliest.

paul skelly wrote:nice one frank :D i think you should change your profile name to Bass hunter

Thanks Paul - I chose the name RockHunter primarily as I am a geologist and secondly when I first started fishing it was lure fishing off the rocks.

I am sure they will, if you fish certain marks a lot you will get to know the stages of the tide and conditions under which they fish best. Plus there is a lot of information to be gained from this site if you read the posts regularly.

I had a similar experience in 2009, I was lure fishing a mark for a couple of hours without a hint of a fish, then as I was heading back to the car I spotted two bass (both a decent size 4-6 lb) crusing about no more than 1m out from the shore, by the time I had a lure back on the rod they were gone  I have fished that mark a few times since but never had a bite.

Thanks Dave, once I saw the surf on Sunday night I reckoned I had a good chance of a bass.

Yeah Pat, I know what you mean. I have had a couple of similar experiences to that myself in the past and I have now tried to learn from them. It’s a common mistake that alot of people make when out lure fishing, I used to do the same myself before I realised that I was actually casting over the fish, missing them altogether or as you said, spooking them/scaring them away. Since then I now cast my lures and plugs shorter and across the waves more and from doing this I have found my catch rate has increased greatly. Not just a Coincidence I think.
That’s the joy of lure fishing, anyone can do it. You don’t have to be a really great caster or to be able to cast long distances to do it and to be successful at it and catch fish. In my mind lure fishing is one of if not thee best forms/methods of catching bass there is. Very exciting indeed!
