Thanks Edgar, I will be out at the weekend myself, might bump into you. I just hope that with all the rain this week that the flood water wont have pushed the cod out into the bay.

It wasn't so much in the middle of the road as in the road as the lane was only about the width of the car!!!
It was a hell of a storm alright - and went from a very light southwesterly breeze to almost a hurricane in just a few hours. Definitely the worse weather I have ever fished in - I would have left before it got too bad if I had been able to get past the rocks at the end of the beach. Now I am going to have second thoughts about accessing the beach from that road whenever there is a bit of a storm blowing.

I have been a lurker and occasional poster here for a few years now..I didn't/don't do enough sea fishing to make any meaningful contribution. However saying that, I have decided to take sea fishing a little more serious this year. I have never fished with bait before so Im going through a rather steep learning curve. And that fact was never more clear to me when I fished a mark on the 31 Oct, I arrived more or less at the same time as another angler, he set up to my left with two rods and had a Cod on the bank before I had even the peeler on the hook and he ended up with a dozen more...I think ye can guess the original poster is the angler in question (well im 99% certain)...I blanked :)
I gave it a go again last nite and I did get one cod my first ever, again fishing to the right of what I again assume is the original poster :D

I logged on last nite had a quick google and found the report of the guy fishing to my right, pretty cool. The internet is a small place :)

I don't claim to be an expert at cod fishing, there are guys on this site that have been doing it for many more years than I have. But the weekend of 30th/31st and last weekend I did seem to be catching more and bigger fish than everybody else at that mark. There are three basic factors which seem to have been important:
I use large hooks, 3/0, 4/0 and 6/0 (normally 4/0)
I use large fresh peeler baits
I dont strike immediately I see a bite but wait a few minutes.

I could see that a lot of the other anglers were using quite small baits and presumably small hooks and noticed that a lot of them were striking immediately they spotted a twitch on the rod tip.
There is obviously a lot more small codling out there than bigger ones. If the bait is large they will probably pull at it from the side (unless they approach it end on - then they are more likely to swallow it in one). Once one small fish has found the bait that will attract more (just like seagulls - when one finds some food the others flock around trying to get it off him) - and if there is a bigger fish in the vicinity it will probably rush in and grab the bait in one go. That may result in a strong tug on the rod tip, although sometimes they seem to just sit there engulfing the bait and it isn't obvious there is a fish on until you start to retrieve.

frank you could also climb behind you up to the field over the beach...quite easy and safe in a few spots  ...then there is a path back to the car park...thus avoiding those rocks...just in case it happens again...and don't forget the chainsaw...hahaha...
well done again

Yes I guess I could have gone back up that way - didn't realize there was a path up there.
When I fish there over big tides I usually would fish for at least an hour into the drop so it was never a problem getting back out - just that night the last hour and a half was really wild and the surf was washing in higher than normal.
Maybe Santa will bring me a chain saw for Christmas
