Rare enough from a boat, let alone the shore! Did you release the little critter or take it back for dinner? Only reason I ask is that by all accounts they're about as good an eating fish as there is. Not often you get the chance to try something like that, even the commercials don't get them very often.

nice on al, say what you want about the pier it does throw up the odd good one now and then, I had a hake of it around 15 years ago and I still talk about it  looks like you could be talking about the john for years to come aswell.

cheers bootster. there seems to ba a lot of old nonsense regarding good eating fish from the sea. so far we've had pouting, coalfish, pollock, gurnard, cod, ling, flounder, turbot, plaice, whiting and bass all deep fried in beer batter. and to be honest a lot of them all taste the same provided they are cooked within 48 hours of being caught. obviously some such as ling and cod are more chunky, but there's not a great deal of difference to be honest. we've been out on boat trips and some lads have said to us not to bother with the coalies and pouting as they taste foul. but when i asked them when did they try them, they replied "oh i never bothered to try them because i was told they were stinking"  . from my own experience i gotta say they all taste nice provided they are fresh  :P
