First Fish Caught

Thanks for the advice David. The float worked a treat even if we didn't hook up on all the bites, the kids got to see when a fish was biting which kept them interested.

I'm sure there are articles online that would instruct you on how to tie a rotten bottom rig, there might even be something on this site?!

Bear in mind that as far as I'm aware a rotten bottom rig is only appropriate when fishing hard on the bottom over rough ground. What I do is use a normal one hook flapper rig using a size 2/0 hook leaving a swivel tied to the end of the rig. I then tie a length of 10lb line of about 2ft. to the swivel. I attach a cheap or make shift weight to the length of 10lb line. The hook snood and the rig body are made using at least 25lb line. Most of the times when I get snagged it is the weight that gets caught. Since the weight is attached to the weaker 10lb line it usually snaps first when I get snagged. This means you get all of your tackle back except for the 2ft. length of 10lb line and the cheap or make shift weight.

N.B. - This style of rotten bottom rig does not allow for safe distance casting. There are ways around this but I won't go into that for now.
