Hi all. Still a relative newcomer to our sport so please take this in the spirit intended.
Is it considered ok to purposely catch 2 inch codling fry that will undoubtedly die on being returned?
So many criticise the European practice of eating all they catch (in whitebait) but in my opinion such practices are no different.
And we cannot say that such small catches are a by product of our search for larger prey if we obviously target such catches through use of freshwater size hooks and baits etc.
I see so many attacks on mackie bashers - how is this different? At least the mackerel are eaten / used for deadbaits.
A genuine question. Given the perilous state of stocks (especially cod) is it sporting to target juvenile fish?

Well chum,
I'll have you know those fish in our report swam back strongly.
You fish for what you've got, The south Coast has Smoothies and Bass, The North Coast has Brilliant Beach Fishing.
The East Down Coast of Down? We've got 3 inch Codling and Coalies. We're not killing them and turfing them back on purpose, its just what we have to put a quiver on the Rod tip.
I've fished Millisle too, in hope of something bigger, but if you watch a Course fishing match, if the big fish arn't playing ball tactics are scaled, same with Sea Angling in matches, "Scratching" is a method used to catch fish in, and around counting size.
You fish for whats there, with methods which catch them. Trust me, I'd be using size 3/0's and Pulley rigs if we were catching 3lb Cod of Millisle pier, but that aint for happening. So we'll fish for whats their, with methods that will produce a few fish for us.
Your comparison to Macky bashers is absurb, and I take offence to it.
And Happily yes, it seems like Cod stocks are finally improving, but in honesty I've watched cormerants surface with more fish in that area, than we've caught....
Live and let live.
Fish and let fish.

yea sea fishing isnt too much different to coarse fishing, if you compare a 3 ounces roach being caught on a size 18 or 20 hook and swallowing the hook to a codling being caught on a size 6 hook, the hook is easier to remove in the codling as the mouth is bigger so you can get at the hook, with the small roach it has a smaller mouth with a smaller hook and you used a disgorger and shuve it down its throat and the roach still lives perfectly, same with the small codling.

Well you obviously didn't take my post in the spirit it was intended. If I gave offence I apologise. I still don't agree with targeting immature fish but we'll agree to differ on that one I guess!
I also know that catching any fish is better for kids than drinking carry outs at the pier and perhaps should have acknowledged that aspect as well.
