just for the record corbyeire there are no dunes on this particular beach and its not a long spin on to it, i would agree with you on ruining sand dunes in the manner in which u describe , would not be wise as erosion is bad on parts of the east coast. and phil u are local too and thanks the rest of u for backing me up, phil mentioned a mr. r**dy whom i know and who thinks he owns the foreshore in a certain area. this man spent 100s of thousands of euros in trying to prove he was the owner of a private foreshore he was laughed out of the court and i have seen documents to prove he was in the wrong, so lads if anybody ever tells u to get off a beach tell them to **** OFF.

Apart from the aforementioned risk to sand dunes driving is hardly any worse than digging lug.
I'd be more worried about him being a Liverpool supporter

Good session mon.

Just to be clear about this the foreshore is the area below the mean high tide mark.

OK here's the legal stuff i could find on it
Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959
240.— Use of beaches etc by fishermen for purposes of sea fishing.
(1) All fishermen and persons employed by them may—
( a ) enter upon all such beaches, strands and wastes on or adjoining the seashore or
any estuary as may be necessary for the purpose of sea fishing, and
( b ) draw up and spread their nets and land their fish upon such beach, strand or waste.
(2) If any person resists or forcibly obstructs any other person exercising any right conferred
by subsection (1) of this section, such first-mentioned person shall be guilty of an offence
under this section and shall be liable on summary conviction thereof to a fine not exceeding
five pounds.
241. - Use by fishermen of land adjoining fishing places.
(1) All watchmen, directors and guiders of fishermen, and all such fishermen themselves,
and all such other persons as shall necessarily attend the nets or fishings at the times
of fishing for sea-fish may enter any lands (not being an enclosed garden or any tillage
land with a crop growing thereon) which lie near or adjoin any fishing place, fit, convenient
and necessary to watch and to draw or carry fish on shore and there watch for the said
fish and direct and guide the said fishermen who shall be upon the sea and sea coasts for
the taking of the said fish
(2) If any person resists or forcibly obstructs any other person exercising any right conferred
by subsection (1) of this section, such first-mentioned person shall be guilty of an offence
under this section and shall be liable on summary conviction thereof to a fine not exceeding
five pounds.
if the worst come to the worst have €2.50on you
181.—If any person enters on any land for the purpose or under the pretence of fishing in any water without authority in writing from the owner or occupier of such land, such person shall be guilty of an offence under this section and shall be liable on summary conviction thereof to a fine not exceeding two pounds.

I'd be careful here, it makes reference to fishermen-not their vehicles. Also looking at section 1 it refers to nets.
a ) enter upon all such beaches, strands and wastes on or adjoining the seashore or
any estuary as may be necessary for the purpose of sea fishing, and
( b ) draw up and spread their nets and land their fish upon such beach, strand or waste.
IANAL but I'd tread carefully. In a lot of cases , the county council owns the beach, but in others, a private owner owns the land/sand/rock above the high tide mark. If he has an issue with vehicular access to the beach, I'd respect it.

there is a definite differance between fishing and ANGLING with rod and line.

id say there is a good chance of someone braking a leg on the said beach because of the ruts left in the sand by the 4x4 tyres.dont think emergancy crews would be thick enough unless they were locals,to drive onto this beach
as its only an overhead thump to the waters edge.

i just brought up the erosion thing as i didnt want this to be a lazy or not debate
as i said already if there is access go ahead
the other thing i would say is if you can drive below the HW mark its best - above HW mark this is where dunes form and are very finiky, the more chance they have to form here the sturdier the mobile dune parts gets and eventually it becomes stabilised - below this the sand is usually harder and easier to drive on anyway
on the issue of access - the beach in mayo i was on about - the farmer just stuck accross a piece of sheep fencing on the access lane and that was it
a lot depends on the particular co co motivation on the matter - as to who has rights/access or not

i fished annyreily last week and had a bad fall in a huge rutt left by a 4 wheel drive vehicle ,i badly twisted my ankle when the gas bottle for my patio heater landed on it ,if it hadnt been for all the rubbish on the beach breaking my fall it could have been a lot worse!!

Driving 4x4s on a beach is nothing compared to the farmers ploughing up the beaches down here in the south. One day last month I went fishing in Caliso Bay in West Waterford. Practically the whole length of the beach was ploughed up, nice neat straight furrows running parallel to the beach from above the high tide mark down to the sea

The tide was rising over part of the ploughed area.
I set up and stepped towards the water and as I was making the first cast my left leg sank down up to my knee in soft, water logged, freshly ploughed sand. I nealy did myself an injury and the rod hopped off the ground in a bad miss-cast
I was wondering what the hell had been going on - then another angler arrived and mentioned that the farmers were preparing for the National Ploughing Championships - cleaning the ploughs and I suppose getting a bit of ploughing practice in.
So a few 4x4s driven on a beach by a few anglers is fairly insignificant compared to the whole beach been ploughed up.
If it is only a few minutes walk from a carpark to the mark you want to fish then I agree that it would seem better to leave the vehicle but as Petekd mentioned if I was fishing someplace like the eastern end of Ballybrannigan which is a 2 km walk from the carpark then I wish I had a 4x4 to get there. Then there also the various going ons in some car-parks at night - sometimes I would be more at ease if I could drive on to the beach and keep an eye on the vehicle.

seen furrows on a beach in wexford too and then wondered what the ****? now i know what that was all about . would like to add too that at the northern end of ennerilley when the sea trout are running up the river the beach is dug out by a jcb to allow the fish up the river, they dont dig it up in a straight line to the river they put in a few meandering bends . half the beach is dug up. dont know if its the fisheries board or other local anglers any body want to shed some light. then the beach is back to normal for the following saeson.
Fri Nov 21, 2008 10:29 pm

not at all i just like to stay as safe as i can. so walking over a churned up sandy beach is not to my liking

and as roger said if you were trying to bring your gas cylinder with you for a bass barbeque on this particular venue you would be rightley f@@ked.
the thing with the ploughs on the beach is they do it to sharpen the plough it gives a much sharper cut to the furrow.
as far as i am aware farmers are also allowed to remove quantities of sand from the beaches aswell

i think it has something to do with ground preperation for crops.
john.....

its the fat lazy ones it 4x4that are causing the problems.
and yes i do have a 4x4 myself but its a family car

i just use my other car for running about and fishing so i dont have to worry about bait smells

.
id take my hat off to a heavily challenged person trying to walk over the sand at least you could see them making a propper effort.

dont be worrying yourself john about the sand dunes being damaged they will be still there long after the carbon footprint from your 4x4 and car have have done away with the Ozone layer and killed all the fish anyway
